Deriving the number 960

960 = 4x4x6x5x4 divided by 2 = 4 places for one bishop x 4 places for the other bishop x 6 places for a knight x 5 places for the other knight x 4 places for the queen

divided by 2 since switching the knights gives the same starting position.

The three remaining places are given to rook, king, rook in that order.

BTW, You can do this quickly and easily by flipping coins! (Figure that puzzle out!)
