Don't know if this is just me but one thing I noticed which I find irritating about chess960 is that the openings usually seem to quickly evolve into awkward, cramped middlegame positions with a bizarre orientation of pieces on both sides that you wouldn't see in a normal game, like most pieces developed but then a knight and rook stuck near the corners that are almost impossible for either side to free. Even the middlegame seems very contrived as a result of this, like it was artificially setup. There is balance and symmetry in the standard opening position that is hard to replicate in another positions. The king is in the center but well defended by the most powerful piece right next to it. Every pawn is defended at least once, some 960 setups multiple pawns are immediately hanging. The equal spacing of the rooks, bishops, and knights creates opening balance, allowing for hundreds of interesting openings that lead to complex and fun games that don't immediately end from a huge unfair advantage in the opening. The number of possible first moves for pieces in the standard setup is also seemingly well balanced, bishops both have an equal number of developing moves, same for the knight, the knights first moves can develop in such as way where they immediately control half the center squares, bishops can be developed to control the main diagonals which they can't immediately do from other positions, and every pawn moves frees up an extra move for at least one piece, this is not the case in many 960 positions. Again maybe this is just me but I feel as though the original starting position is not just historically based or arbitrary, it's a position that is needed to make chess as fascinating and fun as it is.
