I want to hold a variant tournament in Michigan

I run small, Saturday afternoon Chess tournaments in Michigan.  They are not high prestige events, but they are good events.  The site is excellent.  The entry fee is low (ten dollars), and a portion of that entry fee goes to charity.

I would like to expand beyond "regular" Chess to include Chess variants, especially Chess960, Xiangqi, or Shogi.  The problem is that I need players. If you are reading this, and are inclined for OTB play of Chess variants, please contact me.

At my tournaments, there is a large skittles room and I always bring boards for a few variants.  I have westernized versions of both Xiangqi and Shogi, as well as other Chess variants and ancient and modern abstract strategy games of various sorts.  Yes, I would love to play these games against real players, but you have to show up.

And, even if there aren't enough to hold a tournament of a variant, there's always Chess.  My events feature rated and unrated sections.

My next event will be held January 21 in Auburn Hills, Michigan.  If you live anywhere near there, and would like to see Chess variants expand beyond your computer screen, please consider coming out.  Full details can be found at http://gamesinmichigan.com/chessforcharity. Send me message with any questions.

We did manage some Bughouse play at the tournament on January 21, so I made some progress toward my goal of holding a variant tournament. It's a small step, but it's progress.

My next tournament will be April 28.  Same place as the last one, in Auburn Hills.  Once again, I would happily entertain a Chess960 tournament there.  http://gamesinmichigan.com/chessforcharity

If you live in my neck of the woods, consider marking your calendars for that tournament.  If you like variants, you'll be glad you did.

You managed to hold the tournament chess 960 ? Many were willing to participate in it ?

No.  Insufficient interest, although the April 28 tournament did have more variant play than any previous tournament.  There was vigorous Bughouse play from many players, and I played a game of Omega Chess, and there were several games of Xiangqi and Shogi played.

My next tournament will be either October 6 or October 13, depending on site availability.

So you wish to make tournament on all unusual chess ? Players will play in all types of a chess ? It is interestingly conceived , but possibly it is very complex to carry out

I would like to have it be all unusual Chess, but I can't find players.  For now, the tournament itself will be regular Chess, but I will invite players to play Chess variants as skittles games.

The next tournament will be October 13.  Same details as before.

I'm making slow progress in attracting players.  After the last tournament, we had a long running Bughouse competition, and I played a few games of Xiangqi, while some others played Shogi, and I played one game of Omega Chess that someone had brought it.

So, if you like Chess variants and abstract strategy games, and live near here, please, come on out and play. Sooner or later, we'll be able to add sections of Shogi, or Chess960, or one of the many other intellectually challenging, chess-like, games.

When will you be hosting another tournament? I would be interested in playing.

Hi.  I haven't posted a date for my next tournament.  I chose one, and then discovered it was opposite the Michigan Class Championships.  Bad idea.

I'm thinking of February 2, but I'll have to see if the church is available that day.
