My friend and I were experimenting around OTB yesterday, and we came up with a (potentially?) interesting chess variation:
-Pawns can move (not attack) sideways one space
-Knights can jump two squares diagonally (e.g., Nc3-a5)
-Bishops can jump to squares vertically or horizontally (e.g., Bd2-f2. Note that this lets bishops retain the property of being color specific)
The idea is to level the piece playing field a bit by buffing the 3 weakest pieces. Here is an example of a (probably bad) opening in this variant:
A few things I've noticed:
-K vs K-P is now a loss for the defender unless (s)he can capture the pawn early.
-It's possible to smother mate with a bishop
- A knight can travel from any square to any other in at most 4 moves (!)
So, any thoughts on this? Is it mildly interesting, or just as rubbish as most variants (other than grand, 960) are?
