The game starts in normal setup but every piece is gray except for the king, the queen and the pawns infront of them(which are coloured black and white as normally).all pawns on the second rank move towards rank 8 ,all on the seventh towards rank 1(as normally)
Now comes the rule that changes everything:both players are allowed to move grey pieces and by doing so you paint this piece in your colour,so you gain control of it.Grey pieces can't capture other grey pieces.

I see one question coming.  If I'm white and play e.g. c7-c5 then that c-pawn becomes white. But from there how to know which direction it can move. To c4 or back to c6?

c4 as it started on the seventh rank

Can kings be checked by grey pieces?

OK but when the game goes on you see a particular pawn on the c-line and there is no way to tell if that came from the 7th or 2nd rank.

Maybe you could mark it with a little arrow, or have it upside down.
