chess960 to learn chess

would it be better if new players learnt 960 instead? Then they wouldn't learn stuff parrot-fashion.

In my opinion :

a)  a student has to have the good basics in chess

b)  a student has to be bored to already known chess openings & databases

c)  a student has to have a mentor

Yeah but there are book openings you can learn for each of the 960 starting positions too.  Not that hard really if you put the time into it.

To remember from the books the best options for all 960 began , do not have enough of human memory

to sit at a chessboard and encounter a position one has never seen before(or once/twice only)..and THEN play chess.That has got to be better than what players of all standards do..'painting by numbers'!

Yes , and it is desirable that both players did not know the location of the pieces on the board before the beginning of the game . Imagine that they are suited to the chess table on which rests a tablecloth on top .  The judge said that the game began and only then pulled off the tablecloth . And a chess clock have already begun readout of time !

I think you can't completely learn chess from playing 960, but I do believe it is a great exercise in planning strategy and tactics for any position that can arise in either type of chess. Some of the positions in standard chess can also arise in 960, as well as, be really similar.

I think you have to actually practice the positions of standard chess itself, in order to get to the highest levels of play in that game type. In other words, I doubt you are going to go from being rated 2500+ in 960, if you never tried standard chess and suddenly be just as good if you started playing standard chess. I think it would take some time for you to get used to the positions. However, if you were that good at 960, I do think you will eventually be that good or even better at standard chess, due to their similarities and their differences.

What if Chess960 was the first game invented? And then an evil being decreed that only Kings on e1/e8 etc.etc. was allowed.The howls of anguished protest would echo around the world for all eternity!

Yeah but then the question would be:  Were the ancient and medieval people into "random" stuff?  It seems to me they were more hierarchical and into "order" and places than the post-WW2 world.

Good point. That evil being still very active not only in chess, but almost every fields in art, science or sports.
