Tempo

This is a classic chess thread, but I'm posting here since I talk a lot about tempo with you guys. But what does "tempo" actually mean?

A tempo is a turn in chess, strictly speaking. We can lose a tempo by moving the queen twice when it could have reached the end square in one moves. We can gain a tempo by forcing our opponent to use two moves to get a piece somewhere it could've reached in one. But this isn't the whole story.

We can effectively gain a tempo by forcing our opponent into making defensive moves that he otherwise wouldn't want to make, and this is where tempo really is a beast. This is how we use tempo to control the position.

I have recently completed what could be my best game of chess in years, and tempo is the central theme. It's a Nimzo-Indian, which is an defence I'm really enjoying at the moment.

The fun starts on move 15. White has opened poorly and has given up castling rights, but has so far held on to his pawns. I can take the lead with 15... Nxe5, however after the queen exchange, I have doubled pawns on the a-file and this weakness is enough compensation for white.
So...
15... b6!... This comes with tempo, since I now directly threaten Nxe5, and white must respond.
16. Kg1... unpins the queen, so now Nxe5 is no longer a threat
16... Rd8!... There's a tempo here since my queen is now free to move to a5, where the double attack on e5 and c3 means a pawn will fall.
17.  Nb3... stops Qa5.
Now there's a flurry of exchanges, where the tempos are obvious.
17... Bxc3 18. bxc3 Nxc1 19. Nxc1 Qxe2 20. Nxe2...
20... Ba6... attacks the knight, forcing white to once again respond.
21. Nd4 Rac8... now we start hitting pawns
22. Rh3 Rd5 23. Re3 Rc5! 24. Rc1 Ra5! 25. Rc2 Ra4...
And the final tempo, hitting the knight. The pawn c3 is pinned, so we threaten Rxd4. White retreats the knight, exposing the pawn on h4, and finally we take the lead. Further, white has no counterplay, since he will have an uncomfortable time defending his isolated pawns.

Tempo is where it's at. If you want to crush your opponent, this is your best weapon.

Pretty nice game

Not perfect, but I'm not at the level where I ever expect to play a truly perfect game. It's as good as I've got, at no point did I give up my lead and I executed a long-term plan with a high degree of accuracy. So yeah, a highly satisfying game, especially since it ended a run of some pretty disappointing defeats.

Is tugger a club you made?
captaintugwash

No, tugger is a nickname I had when I was younger. It means exactly what you might think. It's a polite way of saying wanker. I had cruel friends, if they can be called friends! That said, I chose to use the name as an internet username, so I obviously found it funny rather than mean.

Captain Tugwash is a play on that nickname... Pugwash + Tugger. It was briefly a DJ name I used, along with my friend Jackson Bollock.

Matt.

That was a good game.

Whoooaa

Cheers guys.

An interesting note...

23... Rdc5 followed by 24... Ra5... that's two moves it took the rook to get to a4 when it can get there in one. But did we lose a tempo? No, because we're making progress. This "lost" tempo means the c3 pawn no longer protects the knight, as it is now pinned.

Also, why is this in the 960 section?
captaintugwash

Because I don't want to talk to the norms.

hitthepin

Ah, I see. Smart.

Waredude
The 'norms' like wanmokewan?
hitthepin

Who is that?

captaintugwash

That's what I thought.

If he reads this, no offence.

You guys don't know @wanmokewan?
