Value of Pieces for "Infinite Chess"

Sort:
captaintugwash

Even pieces on the flanks are controlling the centre, if they are correctly placed at least.

HorribleTomato

no they should change that what if a pawn is deflected to the 0/9th files?

captaintugwash

They still promote on the 0th and 9th ranks, and they can only be deflected a little bit away from what is indeed the centre.

Even in the most extreme case where the far left hawk's pawn captures leftwards for every move, it only gets as far as -18, so that limits the pawns. What else is the main battle arena called if it's not the centre? Always, pieces moving away from it will be returning or at least pointing in that direction, in the sense its influence is still intended to be felt there.

If it's not the centre, what is it? I get that it's weird having a centre in an infinite plane, however it's kind of like if everyone lived in USA, it would be considered the centre of the planet's surface, even though the surface of the planet has no defined centre.

Once the pawns are gone, ok the centre becomes hazy, but the kings will very likely be close to each other, and now they define the centre.

Why is this girl's eye in Silicon Valley featured as the center of everything? Maybe the video could have started at a rock on the moon of another planet. Or maybe started at an empty point in space. I guess the center is the place that is interesting. At least interesting to us.tongue.png

The war zone? You flank the sides also...

The inner center is the four square complex (5,5) (5,4) (4,5) and (4,4)
hitthepin
At least, that’s the area I consider most important.
HorribleTomato

No, the most important parts are the 3-6 files: straight at the king!

Third try with centipawns this time (because cool people use centipawns)

Pawn: 100
Knight: 310
Guard: 325
Bishop: 420
Rook: 625
Hawk: 650
Chancellor: 935
Queen: 1300

Explanation:

Pawn: Self explanatory

Knight: I gave the Knight a little extra because, as I mentioned before, the Knight always controls eight squares, which it doesn’t in classical. This is why I feel it is stronger.

Guard: The guard’s defensive powers are very powerful. Also, it has been mentioned that a knight v guard endgame would logically favor the guard. He is powerful during all stages of the game.

Bishop: I increased my bishop’s value slightly after captaingtugwash mentioned that an unmatched bishop is very powerful. I increased the value of the bishop slightly because of this.

Rook: The rook goes WAY up in value during late middlegame/endgame as more central (if it can be called that - if you take offense pretend I didn’t say it) files open up for it to play. Thus I gave it a whole quarter pawn of a boost.

Hawk: The hawk is definitely worth more than 6. I used to put it at 7, but when the endgame is reached, the strong forking possibilities that make the hawk so powerful begin to disappear. Thus it’s value was decreased.

Chancellor: Rook + Knight

Queen: I believe that the Queen is only slightly superior to two rooks.

Thoughts?
HorribleTomato

queen in centipawns is approximately 1347 if I do say so myself

hitthepin
Uh...
HorribleTomato

A rook is still groveling too a hawk for some reason. To be exact a hawk's power is very close, but not as good. It's about 6.235, and a rook is a respective 6.733 as the rook maintains a strong upper hand V. hawk most of the game.

hitthepin
We will see... I believe the lack of important files it can travel along early in the game make the hawk better.
HorribleTomato

Unless the opponent opens the files for you, *ahem* tugwash...
