I think it is because they just aren't very popular. They would probably add them if a lot of people were interested.

They added correspondence chess 960 a number of years ago. If you look at the list of players, it shows that 114,890 players have tried it, which is less than 1/10th of the list of 1.8 million blitz players.

There were a lot of people asking for live chess 960 for a long time. They finally added it in the new V3.  It is not clear how many people have tried it.

Have you tried it? If enough people actually play it, the staff might realize there is support for chess variants.

You should be the first to invent and write up on such 3d variant. =)

It would definitely be interesting, since most of us are so accustomed to flat surfaces for chess. It would surprise our minds with new challenges to come. haha

I know Hexagonal Chess. I thinked about Capablanca Hexagonal Chess.

BattleChessGN18

Hexagonal chess is still on a 2d flat surface.

Unless you were meaning a different variation to it?

HGMuller

Well, as it is played on the surface of a cylinder, it is not really a 3d variant. Such a service is geometrically equivalent to a plane, and the topological dimension is 2. It is just warped in a 3rd dimension, which playes no role in the game. You only notice periodic boundary conditions.

Alice Chess is more 3d than the cylinder variants.

There are some cylindrical and spherical variants on the chess variants website.

They are usually played on a flat board that "wraps"

Cylindrical (wraps one way either files or ranks, assume ranks, assume 8x8)

King on say a1 can move to h1 + h2 + usual moves for King

Spherical (wraps both ways, assume 8x8)

King on say a1 can move to h1 + h2 + a8 + b8 + usual moves for King

I am expecting a "yes but, no but" response as per usual

HGMuller

Another way to represent the board is as a disk with a hole in the center. As we are talking only about a finite-height cylinder, such a disk is equivalent to it.

There even exists such a Circular Chess variant that has complex rules for pieces to cross the hole. If you think about it it turns out this is equivalent to playing Chess on a Moebius strip. The board wraps on the side edges, but inverted. I.e. from a1 a King could move to h8 and h7 (in addition to the usual a2, b1 and b2).

final_wars

yawn, i did not think about it.

I have idea with hexagonal chess, like original chess. I like original chess idea, or capablanca. So, I made hexagonal chess 2016 (black chess by me).

@acterhd

Just make sure you use 3 bishops man otherwise it wont work on hex.

Good luck man.

acterhd

Yes, I have 3 bishops, 11 pawns.

As chess.com still don't offer this, I decided to put together my own cylinder chess web app cylinderchess.com. I'm a student and worked on this in my spare time – it's entirely free to use (+ no plugins needed and no ads).

Gameplay is on an animated 3D cylinder or you can choose to play on a square board (pieces still wrap around the board). Atm it's designed for live games against friends but I'm hoping to add a feature to match players with similar ELOs. If you try it out, please let me know if you have any suggestions for ways to improve it =)
