Endings. The Fine book. She's always complaining in the novel how it's so boring and has to force herself to even look at it. In the book Morphy is her hero, and grew up in love with his attacking play style.

what do you guys think about the series?
I wonder if they would have made the tv series if this gorl were a guy. I say no.
It is sexist based show.
It's an alternative universe where Bobby Fischer doesn't exist (or more precisely, he exists as Beth Harmon). So I just assume these various fictitious players aren't really supposed to represent anyone intentionally. In '68, the world champion, I believe, was already Spassky, and he only gets mentioned in passing. I actually find it rather good taste that the producers decided not to have "real" chess players at the tournaments. I imagine that Petrosian fans wouldn't be all that amused if Beth Harmon beat him.
Petrosian was world champion in 1968. Spassky beat him in 1969 to take the title.
he's got a point. even fischer, so good that he had almost no american competition, got taken to school the first time he faced real international competition.
It is just an ordinary TV Series. It is not about the opening queens gambit. The movie is great 10 out of 10.
I haven't seen the show yet, but I'm reading the novel right now, and it's really quite excellent. Great writing. Really puts you inside Beth Harmon's head, as she figures out chess in her own brilliant way.
I'm most of the way through the novel now, and it's really quite awesome.
It goes much deeper into Beth's head than you see on the show. In the novel, you actually get to see the moves that she's considering in each match, and follow her train of thought as she weighs different aspects of the positions.
I highly recommend the book to any players who enjoy the show, but would like a heavier emphasis on the "chess" part of it.
I have to admit, I was completely drawn into the series and felt chess-empowered by it.
Woke up feeling like a chess grandmaster! But that only lasted till I thought about how
(badly) i play... OH, well!
I have to say my favorite characters in the movie were the step mother and Benny.
Anna's character is always annoyed at everyone around her, and why did she throw the beautiful doll in the trash when she could have given it to one of the younger kids at the orphanage? Kids who are poor don't just throw stuff away like that.
However I loved when she broke into the kitchen and kept gobbling more and more pills
finally taking the whole jar and collapsing.
Also, it didn't seem that "sixties" to me, some movies do that a lot more better.
I also liked when she sees chess pieces moving on the ceiling!
endings or openings?
