Starting a chess club

I have been thinking for a while about starting a chess club in my town. happy.png It would be a non-profit organisation, so I can apply for a number of subsidies from the Belgian government. I only have time to lose. I have a few questions and am curious what you think about this.

  • Although I love chess, I am not very good at it. Is it okay to be the founder of a chess club while consistently losing to a 10-year-old?
  • This chess club is for all ages. However, it sometimes seems difficult to get children actively involved in chess. Obviously, I don't want them to find it a stupid and boring game. Any tips?
  • Are there people here who have more tips for setting up a chess club?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Yannick,

I say live your dream. Chess club organizers do not necessarily have to be good at chess, what they have to be good at is organizing chess events and tournaments, and have a passion for the game and sharing their passion with others. My local club's organizer is not great at chess, yet we have fun tournaments year round!

For the kids, try reaching out to our sister site ChessKid.com, someone there might have experience with this and may be willing to give some tips.

Best of luck!
