every rating group of players do this. 1200's do it to 800s, 1600s do it to 1200s, 2000's do it to 1600's and 2400's do it to 2000's.
Its part of human ego. if you've improved in something to a level greater than another group of people, u naturally see urself as superior so u see it as normal to make fun of them.

Yup, most people can´t handle ratings.
I don't view myself superior to those lower rated than me, they would kick my butt in something else.

It was created by a notorious troll (Chomper) to "defend" (in giant airquotes) another notorious troll.
But in reality the goal was to abuse chess.com's community. Like everything else Chompy ever does.
And of course no moderator intervened to protect the community against trolls, because why would they.
