abandoned when switched to messages

how come whenever i switch to messages on iphone to reply to a text, i immediately get kicked for "abandoning " the game, but whenever someone just leaves the app open and forgets about it, it takes over 4 minutes to finish? wtf, why?

Leaving the game screen is considered abandoning the game. If the Gane stays active it's I'm not possible to know how if someone is still thinking or not.
