The OP was playing super turk girl. How do I know? She said the same things to me. Someone called someone else a nigger on livechess the other day, and not in a joking way. Should this be tolerated? I reported it, and am waiting to see what happens. Was I wrong to report it? I agree with Reb that thicker skin is required, but there is a line and racism crosses it.

She also told you f--- your country and that Armenian lies are the genocide of truth?

No, banning speech is not the answer. That is the hallmark of authoritarism, and is never the right solution. Granted, it is not pleasant to receive such undeserving hatred and hostility (I really am suprised at the amount of venom that some of you have been subjected to). But when an individual engages in such acts all it really does is show the faults and poor quality of the individual speaking such vile words.

I wonder what sludge-like, reeking thoughts go through the damaged minds of such abusive people........... No, forget it! I am here to play chess and every opponent is a potential friend.

The correct thing to do is ignore...all hate and racism would eventually end if the people being targeted simply stopped giving a shit...

or if every racist, bigoted person had their mouth filled with cement...

Free speech may be afforded within most democratic societies, however no-one has a fundamental right to a platform for their speech.

If you were to come into my house and espouse your hatred you can expect to get ejected.  Erik has the same right to eject people as, after all, we're all guests in his house here.

Wow, I played super turk girl and she never said anything nasty to me. As I recall I won our game but because she timed out.....

stanhope13

of course people should be polite, but don,t concentrate on a minority who are,nt.

You can pre-move your abuse?

Kernicterus

She sounds perfectly hilarious with this same Armenian shtick each time.

I noticed super turk girl was premoving about 5 6 moves in the opening, so one game went e4 d6 d4 Nf6 e5 g3 exf6 b*stard etc etc

And then she couldn't castle because it was illegal due to the pawn on g7!

My parents taught me that "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."   Seems like a good, simple value to live.   If people, in your judgement, cross the line and become abusive, please do report them to chess.com.   Abusers need to know that such behaviour is not tolerated, and it will help keep chess.com free of such people.

I've been called a dirty jew in "live chess" and a note was sent to me saying the same thing. Although i didn't report the person, I just cba. These people are everywhere. Live with it. And just ignore.

I wouldn't ignore it. I would take action against it.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Right, I agree, and would re-phrase to "Live with it, don't let it bother you, report them"

bigpoison

I would laugh, shake my head, and then hit "submit move".

Should someone be banned for calling me a redneck?! What about a barefoot hick or country bumpkin ? I think people need thicker skin myself.

There is a large difference between your examples and the ones being presented. I don't think anyone is advocating the banning of all name callers, but there are varying levels of name calling.

I see... you are one of those who believe only certain groups should enjoy such protection ? I have to disagree completely. Either you cannot say anything offensive to anyone or anything goes.... I dont see any other way myself. Unlike you, I believe we are all equal and should enjoy the same protections, if any at all. I dont like being called names either but I dont want anyone banned for calling me a name, no matter how offensive.

This is 100% the truth.

If you come to the chess club and start calling people names, what do you think will happen and how do you think people and TD will react? And if you add to it racist remarks? chess.com is a chess club online. The normal people come here to play chess, read articles, talk about chess, etc., like in the real club. And the morons who can't stand their losing or are just in the bad mood insult others, very simple. They should be thrown out immediately like they will be dealt with in the club, restaurant, movie theatre, at the concert, etc.
