Advantages to 'friends'?

What are the advantages of having 'friends' on chess.com.

By this I mean people who request or are requested. I mean, I understand that people I actually know in real life or people I play often or enjoy playing may be easier to challenge or communicate with but is there any advantage in accepting friend requests from strangers or people I played in a quick 3 minute game?

I'm not being miserable, I'm just wondering.

thanks.

siluriun

I only accept friend requests from players I know or have met in real life, or players I have an extensive online relationship with.

If there are members that you would enjoy playing multiple games with, adding to friends is any easy way to know when they are online for games.

siluriun

harmless fun with friendships !

fischeriii

being friendly is part of chess manners, you never know who are you dealing with, perhaps a blessing

Thanks both. That's what I thought. btw Siluriun, is it just a huge coincidence that you and I are already friends or do friends posts pop up earlier than others? I guess globally we're quite local within a couple of hundred miles so we're likely to be on at the same time.

anyway.. thanks both.

its a chess site that also has a social aspect  and at times you are better placed to help a friend than a stranger

I'd think the advantage is that you can possibly learn from your friends (unless they are alot worse then you lol), you can learn from someone who is a friend, plus the overall competitive environment is not as stressful and intense as it is with a stranger.

I get quite a few “ friends “ request, but once their on my friends list, that’s the last I hear from them . I’m frequently having to do a “ spring cleaning “ operation to get rid of some of these so called “ friends “ 😤

Yes. That's one of the reasons for asking. I'm about to do a spring clean myself.

If you like starting tournaments, you can invite your friends list!  It also allows other tournament directors an easy way to invite you to tournaments.  Although I have dropped a few of those.

AlCzervik

the advantage used to be that you are alerted when that person starts a new topic, and, it was easier to get to their home page to write notes.

there is the option of following others now.

what i don't understand is why some hide their friends list. if they're friends, why would you be embarrassed for others to see them?

is there now a fast option for inviting all friends now? i asked about this over a year ago and my query was ignored.

I will accept all friend request.

I do not discriminate people by judging

" Joined 1 minute ago"

" Joined 1 hour ago"

Or " Joined 1 year ago"

4 benefits of having friends

1. You can see them in live chess, can challenge them or follow their game

2. Can challenge friends regardless of the difference in rating (in most cases)

3. Can see notes / write notes on their wall( in default setting)

4. Can follow your friends posts.

And friend request is free, accepting friend is free!!
