An Inconvenient Truth

Given x = 1 and y = 1, then

x = y

Multiplying each side by x,

x2 = xy

Subtracting y2 from each side,

x2 - y2 = xy - y2

Factoring each side,

(x + y)(x - y) = y(x - y)

Dividing out the common term, (x - y) results in

x + y = y

Substituting the values of x and y,

1 + 1 = 1

or

2 = 1

x-y = 0

You are not allowed to divide by 0.

yeah, it was very remarked

(but you are a spoiler)

Avatar of philidorposition

dividing by zero is not allowed, and (x-y)=0.

-2 = -2
4 - 6 = 1 - 3
4 - 6 + 9/4 = 1 - 3 + 9/4
(2 - 3/2)2 = (1 - 3/2)2
2 - 3/2 = 1 - 3/2
2 = 1

If you build it, they will come point out what is wrong with it and therefore how much smarter they are than you.

standard fallacy created by division by zero.

Division by zero does not produce "infinity". Infinity is not reached by calculation.

Avatar of Dragec
Division by zero is not defined. Function 1/x has a singularity in 0.
