Arrogant Chess Players

I have met more than one arrogant chess player. After playing the game, I do not see how it is possible.

The guys who I have run into must have a very short memory, or only play people with much  lower ratings.

Chess should have the exact opposite result. It should make you realize how stupid you can actually be. It has for me!

You can turn off comments, sometimes people try to distract you on your turn. There is a lot of arrogance in this app. I find the more I know about chess, the less I actually know. You should normally be quite well matched to your opponent.

I rarely say anything to my opponent when playing outside of hello. I will say "good game" if I think the player actually played very well and did something worthy of consideration: usually it's either  a really nice combo, or just playing positional chess really well.

Of course, if the person is on my friends list, that's a different matter altogether.

In any competitive environment there will always be arrogance, the difference is it is mostly online, so keyboard warriors feel a bit more brave than they would talking face to face.

While I’m new to chess I’ve been disappointed but not surprised at some of the comments I’ve seen when players who are struggling ask questions.

My background is mostly competitive tabletop games and video games but the unpleasant elements of the community are consistently identical.

I will always take advice on board from those higher than me, however that doesn’t mean those higher have a right to look down on anyone below. (Unless you’re in the top 5-10% at which point bragging rights have probably been earned)

+1 most people are this way or they just don’t say anything.

I reported a player who was offering a draw three times (not once but three times) when he was obviously losing the game as a way of distraction. When I was about the checkmate him, his was disconnected right at that moment. Normally I don't care but I was in a bad mood that day so I reported the incident to the admin and they took action. I think there should be common decency and sportsmanship even online.

Don't let it upset you so much, I've met a lot of decent people. But there are always some toxic people that for some reason stall out the game when they lose or whatever.

I solved the problem by muting the game chat in settings.

Also, just ignore unwanted draw offers -- when you make your next move, the draw offer is automatically declined.  There is no need to reply to (or to even notice) draw offers.  Once you realize this, the unwanted draw offers stop being a distraction.

|Just don't play with people like that. And make sure they know WHY you aren't accepting their invitation to play, if they send one. Spread the word. Either they'll improve, or they'll find themselves alone on here. That's my opinion. I'm a bad player, and I struggle with my ego tons of times. but if someone is making the game less fun for you, report them or ignore them
