It's completed too fast to be human.

Indeed. I agree. It's not like money was on the line. This is an internet competition for FUN. So there was a glitch in the matrix. Report it and move on. No reason for you head to go all esplodey...

No this is actually a serious issue.

Just play chess? Ok then, you have a completely random chance of winning a tournament, it's nothing to do with skill at all... are you happy?

Theoretically, no matter how the pairings work, the best player in the tournament will still win the tournament (yes, accidents do happen, but that's why I said theoretically). However, based on how the pairings are done, the next best player could end up in any place from second to last.

re turny if you finish on equal first with a higher rated player you only get silver now i would give gold to the lower rated player

Are you seriously pissing and moaning about a 10 minute rapid online chess tournament?  Last I checked, chess.com wasn't awarding GM norms on winning these "tournaments", lol.  Not to mention half the field for all chess.com online tournaments withdraw after the first round.  WHO CARES, the entitlement attitude on this site is ridiculous

yeah seriously. it's even wrong to call a 10 min tournament "rapid". rapid, as delineated in the fide handbook, is 15 and up. 10 min no increment is still definitely blitzing for everyone below 2300. why I'd even say that 2 people rated 1200-1500 playing a ten minute game is more or less the same as two 1900-2000s playing a no increment bullet game.

WalangAlam

The pairings get's mixed up when a lot of players withdraw or abondon their games after the first round. I participated once and discovered there were only 5 players left after round 1 when there were about 16 when it started really ridiculous!

Ziryab

Chess.com has work to do to make the tournaments here worth playing. They should exclude players without a rating history and notorious laggers. Those who enter, play one game and then withdraw should have a temporary ban from tournaments (maybe two weeks). Those who complete a set number of tournaments without forfeit (early withdrawal) could be given a trophy. The Swiss pairing rules must be fully and correctly implemented.

can't agree more!

Are the pairings done automatically by the software or by a human?  If by a human, I can understand errors being made because humans are imperfect and can often make mistake if they are in a hurry, under pressure, etc.  If the pairing is implemented automatically by software, then someone should find the bug and fix it.

Of course its software.

Humans build software.  Often in a hurry or under pressure....

Hence, the cause is still human error, but in the programming.

you end up playing against everyone anyways, so who cares :/.

The only problem I see with tournaments are people losing first game and then quitting. Making it unfair for everyone else.

Ziryab posted a good idea for making it so people don't leave games just cause they lost a match.

Bye bye OP.  I'm sure chess.com and the rest of the online chess community cares that you stopped playing here.

I agree that the pairing system here is not very good. The first place person with 3/3 was paired with a one pointer, while I was paired with a 1500 who had 2 points...

me and another guy both had 4/4 after 4 rounds of a 5 round tournament and it didn't pair us together.  instead it paired us both against guys who had only 3 points.  we both ended up with 5/5 points, but i got 2nd because i had 8 tie break points to his 10.

shouldn't we be paired against each other no matter what, and if anything, let the two other guys have byes if there's no one else for them to play with?

i don't think color is an issue, since at times you can get 3 blacks and one white in a 4 round tournament, there's simply no avoiding it at times.

here's what my medal says, if it helps:

"From: CHESScom

"Congratulations! You have won 2nd place in the 15|10 Standard tournament with an overall record of 5-0-0""

another thing that's been buggin me is that whenever i join an open tournament there's all these 1200 rated guys who have never played a game before, and sometimes they're pretty tough and beat me and other guys and we lose mega points beause of it.  shouldn't there be some sort of rule about not losing points to unrated guys when you're more than 500 points higher than them?  or at the very least, it should calculate their end of tournament rating and then give re-adjust your rating with a bonus if they are say, rated over 1900 at the end of the tournament, after starting out 1200!  (seen it happen, a new guy took down me, i was 1750 at the time, and a nm who was 1950! (i beat the nm too!  :) ))

i notied a lot of people saying this is no big deal to have bad tournaments, and to that i say that people are going to go to the site which is the best, and play there.  at least the people who are paying money are.

i like chess.com the best, but honestly, i'm starting to think that maybe i should take my business to icc or wherever kingscrusher plays, chessworld.net.  if this nagging feeling that i could be getting better tournaments somewhere else keeps growing i'll probably be more tempted in the future to at least try anotehr server.

it can be super fun playing in tournaments online, or a real buzz kill when they kill the mood with lame pairings or ratings adjustments.  i see these videos where kingscrusher's playing tournaments on other servers and it looks like maybe they're running better?  (though the interface looks kind of 90's)
