Beginner!

Hi everyone

I just joined this website and am a complete beginner at chess, although finding it really interesting and fun so far. I have learned the pieces and how they can move and have been doing the chess mentor and tactics trainer (which I'm not very good at). I even tried playing against the computer - it was a very short game :). My question is, how can I learn more about how to play without being beaten really easily / quickly?? The daily puzzles are too hard for me. Is it worth getting a programme like Fritz or Chessmaster? I think need to learn more before I can actually play anyone.

Thanks for any advice / comments!

Amy

try watching high rated players on live chess and copy an opening that you like.  you should get to understanding the ruy lopez look at it in game exporer; simple and effective thats how i started out.  another thing you should note is to look one move past when you think you should.

I found that Chessmaster was very good at improving my playing.  It is flexible to allow for playing agains a wide range of players and the training and tutorials are pretty good.
