Buy them a membership on here or chess kids. Buy a board & sit down & play with them. Buy some basic easy to read books on how to play chess. You can also get chess games on the consoles, xbox & that.

Chess kid actually has a printable curriculum. One early part that I found useful is the Farmer McDonald little piggy teaching storyline, they get to play simple versions like all pawns on one side and the king in the other. The young kids had a lot of fun with that.

To be honest it depends how old they are. What might be good for 11-12 year old wouldn’t necessarily work for kids half of that age. 

If they’re on the younger side, don’t over-teach, they’ll get bored very fast. Just get them having fun, some mini-games, whatever, and don’t worry about them improving for now.

If they’re on the older side, then you have to assess their temperament, whether they prefer reading or online etc, even then, if they’re beginners, playing and not ‘study’ is the best bet.
