Beware of Upgrading Membership Subscription

Be careful how you upgrade, folks. If you upgrade before your current subscription expires, by clicking the upgrade link in the chess.com app, Chess.com and Apple will not give you credit for your current subscription.

I upgraded in September and my earlier subscription expires in February. I will not receive credit for those 5 months. Chess.com blames their contract with Apple. Apple won’t issue a refund. So I pay and Chess.com receives two subscription fees from me for 5 months.

Pretty rotten way to treat the members. Chess.com blames Apple, but Chess.com keeps the subscription fees.

To avoid paying twice, you can contact chess.com and ask to upgrade. Don’t click the upgrade link in the chess.com app, which is set up to go to Apple.

Good luck! Play well!

Same thing happened to me. That is unscrupulous.

They should take better care of their long time members

You just joined 35 minutes ago and you are not a premium member.

How can it have happened to you?

At any rate, if it did happen to you with a former account, you could have written to support and I am pretty sure they would have given you credit for the remaining time.

The site can't control how the Apple app store works but as mentioned by @justbefair support can help with issues encountered.

Can we upgrade without upgrading

What do you mean?

If you mean purchase a premium extension, while your premium is active, that's not possible.

Thank you

That's a crap policy. It might, but likely not, be worth it to reach out to them and explain you'll upgrade if they refund what's left of your existing subscription. Once my year is up I'm out to that other free and better chess site!

It's possible to upgrade from a lower tier to a higher tier. If the purchase was on the website then the unused portion of the existing premium is credited to the purchase. I think Android also works that way, but the iOS app store handles it differently; that's an Apple thing, not a chess.com process

I see.
