That rather depends on how smart they are. We're not any different to cavemen 100k years ago. All that is different is a lot of generations of passed down knowledge.

So the question would be are aliens capable of travelling the stars by necessity exceptionally smart, or do they just have the benefit of lots more generations of passed down knowledge but somewhere in the region of our intelligence.

Before anyone says anything about how chess is not about intelligence. It is to a point. If there is a big enough gulf in smarts, then it absolutely is relevant.
