Not sure but Apple takes a cut of every purchase and Chess.com probably builds that into the app price there. Just buy on the website and it works for your account and the app.

the gold yearly membership on ipad is $44.99. On the PC its $40. Why?
Does the membership restrict you to one device?
If I take a yearly membership can you upgrade during the year?
