Chess Masters or Masters of Chess?

I believe that in order to become a chess master you have to let it master you. Chess must be on your mind all the time, the commitment to the game is exhausting this is why there are so few true masters.

I let chess be in my mind all the time, but I am still not a master yet!Undecided

You just made an error in motus ponen. Just as X implies Y, mastery implies complete dedication. Just because dedication, or Y, is true, mastery, or X, is not necessarily true. Motus ponen states that if X implies Y and X is true, then Y is true, not the converse.

Plenty of folks are masters & still have other jobs/talents/families even.

That's like saying to be good at one thing you must suck at the rest.

chess is like any other profession, you need to put forth the proper effort to achieve mastery. you cannot expect to be a master or professional if you do not get the proper education and training. thinking about chess will get you no further than thinking about being a surgeon. instead it is important that we seek out the truth of chess, really study it's mechanics. it is useful too to ask ourselves what qualities in the master might be lacking from our own skill set.
