Question on Scid on the go: I have an android tablet (Samsung Tab A6). The unit does have a micro sd slot. I'm able to use the Scid on the go on this system...however, I want to use the SD ram to hold the data bases (pgn). For the life of me I cannot get the Scid System to access the folder in which the pgn files are located (scid folder on the sd card)...any suggestions...or am I missing a simple detail here????
Thanks in Advance!

Just answered my own question....one has to go to "files" on the sd card...go to the pgn file under the given folder (scid)...and hit it...thus, with this system, it is not "smart" in terms of loading the data files...we must go to the file itself and trigger it...from outside the scid system.....chessbase, for instance, one does this within chessbase (or one can also do it outside chessbase...but I'm accustomed to doing all file operations (from the chess perspective) within the system...
I have a Renko combination db I'm using...really nice on the Android!

I just added a post on my blog about adding chess engines and databases to Scid on the go. You might find it useful Scid on the go. https://chesstech.wordpress.com/2017/09/04/scid-on-the-go/
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to start this thread on chess mobile apps, so that we all can share our experience with the apps out there for mobile phones. I own an Android, so I will post a couple of good/not so good things just to give my own feedback on some of them:
Scid on the go: FREE. By far the best app to browse databases. There are arrows to show the different variants, and the look-and-feel is realle good. Supports import/export of PGN files, and of course the Scid .SI4 file format.
Chessbase: PAID. Nice look-and-feel, but small buttons. I was very dissapointed that a Chessbase app cannot support CBH files (only handles PGN). Also dissapointed because the built-in engine is not Fritz but Stockfish (which is a free one). Needs to be improved to be worth buying it. Otherwise Scid is way better.
Droidfish: FREE. GUI for Stockfish engine. Very strong engine. Look-and-feel pretty similar to Scid On The Go. You can play entire games or set up a position. Integrates with Scid On The Go.
iChess: FREE/PAID. Chess puzzles (around 1,000 for free) of different levels, from beginner to Master. Nice look-and-feel.
TacticTrainer: FREE/PAID. The free version needs Internet connection. Somewhat slow UI. Otherwise you have over 20,000 for free in the online database.
ChessOCR: FREE. Uses your mobile camera to make a picture of a chess diagram, and sets up the position on a chessboard. Integrates with Scid On The Go and Droidfish. If you have a good camera, it should work. Mine is always trying to auto-focus.
ChessOCRPict: FREE. Same as above, but uses a saved picture as input instead of making a snapshot with the camera. Very buggy, though.
Remember that you can install all this from
