I am looking for chess software (preferably from the "download" section of this site) that will enable me to set the board up to a certain situation and then allow me to play against the computer from that point forward. Do you know if any such programs are available?

this is a java game which allows you to setup a position and then analyse the best move for a selected colour. Very handy if your playing someone whos getting extremely cocky and confident, then i use this to tear their game apart =)

That is a pretty cool site. I kinda want to practice my endgame: achieving a checkmate with 2 knights or 2 bishops...things like that. Anywhere you know where I could start a game against a computer opponent in a particular situation?

think you can do it with chessmaster 9000, less than $15 when i got it

Probably even cheaper these days! I got Chessmaster X for about 10USD in Sweden

i got chessmaster9000 for about 20 pence [uk money] in a local charity shop, and haven't even used it yet.
