I love the game of chess and have recently started using this app. Most players if they use chat are friendly but twice now I have run into opponents who literally start using the chat function to try and belittle or cuss at me (?!) what the heck? I know that’s not what the game is about nor what this site wants to promote.

I highly recommend a player peer rating feature that includes a sportsmanship score. If it consistently is low you should pause their account and after too many poor scores kick them off!

Am I alone here?

It already exists. If somebody is a poor sport, you are asked to report them. Those who get multiple negative reports can be assigned to a special pool, where they are kept away from normal players and made to play with each other.

To chat with me, they must first send me a chat request. I usually don't even notice it. Even if I do, I don't always accept. Even if I accept, I don't reply if someone cuss at me. I rather enjoy it when they do. Especially when they are losing.

Anyway, I haven’t encountered such behaviour this year. It's been a while I have seen someone trash talking in the chat.

Even in OTB, when someone's trash talking me, I usually don't reply much. I only laugh it away. It never bothers me, honestly. You can't troll someone who has already mastered trolling himself. But, I retired from trolling a long time ago. It was before I became active in this community.

They should have their account disabled and IP address blocked immediately if found guilty after being reported.

Chess platforms generally aim to foster a respectful community, but as you've seen, there are occasional outliers who use chat to try and distract or insult others. This behavior can be frustrating and goes against the spirit of chess.
