I just want u to know that Chess University´s promises of "Special prizes" for the top finishers in their tournaments are quite fake, I finished first Place and when I didnt receieve any prize at all I finally asked them what the special prize was and after thinking for a while they returned and told me that I could get 10 USD credit in their webshop.....who are these guys!? They are also giving this site a bad rep as they seem to be quite affiliated with chess.com!

How much did you have to pay to enter?

docwedberg

Ohh, well luckily that was for free!:-) It was fun to take part but I dont like it when they advertise their tournaments implying that there will be "special prices" when they dont even in the end acknowledge who finished 1-3 and then when I ask them they dont even know what tournamnet I was in and finally when they have thought it over answer me that I can get 10 USD....and they still consider this a special price.....whaooooow.......happy.png

docwedberg

But maybe as drmrboss wrote it....its an internet "thing" why bother its their reputation not mine.....

If you found $10 laying on the ground, would you pick it up, or just walk past it since "its just $10"

Gatsuuuu

Liars.

docwedberg

IM Bacon I would most probably pick it up as most people would of course but this is an entirely different subject! If someone claims to give you something ”special” would u still consider this to be special if you recieved 10 dollars!? Well, maybe you would....our perspectives could be very different chess players or not Ill give u that....

And i think that is what it comes down to, "perspective"

To some $10 is nothing, to others it could be everything.

While it may not be much to you, I still think you should be grateful.  Not for the amount, but for the thought, and gift.

ChessUniversity

@docwedberg,

Chess University awarded you a prize of $10 for winning a 31-player online correspondence tournament that was free to enter. It seems like 99.99% of online chess tournaments don't come with any prizes. We thought we were being generous for giving away free prizes through our tournaments. We have given away larger prizes before such as over $50 but those were for winners of large tournaments (that had several hundred participants or more).

docwedberg

Hey guys! If you think 10 USD is a "special prize" thats fine with me! And if you write from the start what the prize is instead of claiming it to be "special" none of this discussion would ever have taken place, right! To continue this you also wrote that special prizes for the top finishers which means 5 USD for second place and maybe 2 dollars 50 cents for coming in third, yeah right special indeed...for some...as a credit on your website....better find this money on the street at least u can choose what to spend it on!happy.png

Without looking I think that participating in your online classes cost a lot more and for those that think 10 USD is special and attend a tournament for several months for this amount maybe you should give them a better discount for your classes and indeed the prize would be special.....

I just wanted to inform others about this and for those that Think this is ok thats fine, for those that doesnt Think its ok know have a choice and they will probably not bother you either, so in the end everybody benefits!

Close this thread now and have a good (chess) summer!happy.png

ChessUniversity

The reason the specific amount wasn't listed is because we have no way to determine how many members would join the tournament. We determined prizes based on number of participants.

We have many courses and I believe that's at least one or two courses priced below $10 so those could be acquired for free with your prize.

docwedberg

There can only be 1-3 that finishes first no matter how many that participates and as long as it is a free to join tournament just set a fixed prize or dont start the tournament until you have a specific number of participants, couldnt be so difficult! Hey Im your free consult here give me some credit for that!happy.png

Schackarias

@docwedberg I work for the Red Cross in Sweden and I try every day to get donation of an amount equivalent to 10 USD and that gives five people clean water for the rest of there life! And you got it for free! How can you be upset? // Fellow Swed that played same tournament just for fun!

Schackarias

@Postafi But 10 USD is in my mind a special price for a free correspondence chess tournament without any more that Chess.com own cheat program. I mean when I saw the titel I thought that the winner might get som special trophy or similar and now he get something with real value!

Perhaps he was upset because the advertising was misleading.

It wasn't especially misleading.

$10 is not the real cash he get. What I understand is he has the chance to choose $10 equivalent website contents.

I can make a blog/website, give you $10 present card, where you can see $10 package for 20 of my games with analysis. or 20 tips of chess masterpiece tips.

(P.S, At the moment, all my games and posts and free for all public but they will have $$$$ tag later, in my personal blog!! Hurray and check my free stuff) grin.png
