Chess.com Rating = Real Life ELO?

Hi there,

How well does the Chess.com rating reflect real life ELO? That's my question after joining Chess.com and already being rated in the 1700's after only four games (wins).

In real life I'm a quite recent club player with an assesed ELO of 1400 (no tournament experience so far). If the Chess.com rating is correct, then my summer holiday Chess practice really seems to be paying off! Tongue out

What's your experience: Is the Chess.com rating too high, too low or fairly correct?

Thanks in advance,

No correlation

yeah I have seen very little correlation from the members here who have posted the only general rule is if real life rating under 2000 than C.c under 2K if above then C.c Above. if the rule is broken for Under 2Kers by more than say 200 points than something Fishy is going on.

Probably just standard?

@MSC157: What do you mean by that?

My chess.com rating is definitely too generous! From my brief experience online there are a few factors for this:

  • The analysis board is a luxury that you don't get in real games
  • The chance to stare at the board for 30 minutes, which you wouldn't be allowed to do normally
  • In quite a few of my games, my opponents seem to be in a rush most of the time and make some of the silliest mistakes
  • Then some of my opponents are lazy and resign when I would have gladly accepted a draw from them

So to answer your original question: there doesn't seem to be much correlation. Perhaps my live chess is better reflected...

Just standard live chess is fairly correct. Should be, but there are engine-users, so...
