I believe the Free Membership thing is an enticement to see how you like the features of the site. If you don't use it, you sink back to the vast sea of nobodies who have to deal with pop-up ads and limited features.
Why am i not a premium member?

Last year i hadnt got an offer,i had got free membership for a week.I didnt log in even once during that time as i was busy.I came to know of that only when i got an email later.So this year i opened my account on my anniversery to find nothing.I just wanted to know why

Free memberships aren't the norm. You were probably randomly chosen to get a temp membership and may or may not ever get another one.
