Country Flags

Why are some of the old Spanish kingdoms given flags despite their having been incorporated into the Spanish state in the 1720s, and some of them never having existed (Catalonia has never been a coherent polity; the counties and duchies of the area were part of the Crown of Aragon)? Why is it just Spain (and a handful of others) that do this?  I mean besides the mods being Catalonian nationalists...

we aren't an official repository for defining countries or nations.

we allow people to choose their identity and offer as many options as reasonable. sometimes this causes problems when there are disputed countries. but we aren't picking sides - we're a chess site trying to make people happy. we encourage people to resolve their differences in the appropriate political venues, not on our site.

enjoy!

That explains the Spanish flag...but such an explanation makes the Russian flag ban seem kind of hypocritical, IMO. A global conflict that chess.com has not only failed to allow Russians choose their identity regarding but also has taken a side on...

MD1806

That explanation is just as patently absurd as when I played on the site years ago and had the same question. They can't resolve it without outing themselves as Catalonian separatists (remember, Catalonia has never been a country, and separatism is as illegal in Spain as it is in any country). Nothing the mods say will ever make sense in that regard until they allow only UN-recognized flags.

There is a South Georgia flag, despite that fact that it has no citizens. Perhaps they are trying to please the penguins.

FA-18E_Super_Hornet

how about south sudan?

Snowchlobe

south sudan is a country.

Snowchlobe

i like the flags bc i prefer speaking to people from my country.

bramjam55

Snowchlobe

Because you use the right flag, unlike others from your country.

Snowchlobe

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all countries too.

"Country" is shorthand for "independent country." None of the four you listed are that. Also, Wales and Northern Ireland have never been independent polities; they've only ever been subjects of the English/British/UK government.

Когда появится флаг Беларуси?

it should be soon. chess.com is american and America is supporting Russia now.

if you hide the Belarus flag then you have to hide American flags too.

For many people, these flags represent a connection to a unique historical and cultural heritage.

That is correct (maybe apart from calling it the English government - I think it's the UK govt, but I expect someone will correct me).

But the point is that we each have our own football team . So we each need our own flag for that.

That's the FIDE motto right?

FIDE's motto is "corruption first, especially if it comes from Russia" (seriously, look up the history of FIDE going back to the 1960s)

Snowchlobe

it doesn't matter that england or wales aren't independent countries. the correct way to refer to them is country.
