I will demonstrate why the winning video is unacceptable.

Imagine the following scenario, and ask yourself why it sounds ridiculous, not funny or shocking.

Imagine that the genders in this video are reversed. It's a woman sitting at the computer, playing chess. Suddenly her boyfriend/husband walks in, only wearing a G-string and boots, and making alluring comments about getting into bed. As he approaches the computer, the woman quickly hides the chess.com website and displays some pornographic video, with the man in a submissive position and the woman dominating the action. The boyfriend/husband then leaves the room, dropping his G-string on the way out. The woman at the computer then smiles, and accepts a rematch instead of going to the bedroom.

If you're honest you'll admit that something isn't quite "right" about this scenario, and that this hypothetical version would NEVER have won the video contest entry. Now ask yourself why?

The answers to these questions demonstrate why this video is unacceptable.

If you still don't get it, think of the messages being conveyed through this video. For example, think of messages about the place of women in the world in general, and in the world of chess more specifically.

I appreciate this very much! Thank you :)

The real punchline is when the smug, two-faced hypocrites something something.

Great idea ;) I don't have any software for making videos or any experience in it, I would try otherwise.

Have you a smart phone even? you could always use that;)

No, they are still rare in Poland :)

Have you tried searching ebay and amazon, they have great cameras and software to help you edit and you can also download free trials for abode.com and they have lots of tutorials on how to edit

True, but anyways, it's adobe.com and not abode.com

This reflects my sentiments exactly.

I can't see why now no-one on the site can't start displaying pornographic videos on their profile.. since chess.com ENDORSES it and REWARDS such type of videos, when in the past any sexual type of avatars or videos seen or reported were removed by staff.. it makes no sense to me... it's inconsistent/hypocritical messages being sent here. Still am shocked. Even though I did find the video funny and clever I just think it's the wrong place for it and staff shouldn't be endorsing it as the winning video of their site.

@Suzette, as far as the message about women in the world in general, I agree if there is a message of harrassment or abuse, domination,  intimidation involved, then it isn't acceptable, but I didn't get that message from this particular winning video... but I know there are plenty of porn videos that do show women be forced against their will to have sex, rape videos, violent porn videos and they should be removed and the site owners prosecuted, as it lays risk of encouraging 'some' men to follow similar action, and it sends the message that this is ok when it is definitely nowhere near ok, it's a crime.

I am just against promoting porn on a family chess site that has kids/young teenagers playing.. it makes the site/staff look very desperate for business when you stoop that low, as in go against your own rules what you say the members themselves can't do. Really don't understand it.

chess_kebabs

I know the point you're tying to make Suzette, I think, that women shouldn't be promoted as being  subservient to men.. right? And I agree with you there.. girls who allow themselves to do that, look silly/dumb, and lose their own self-respect. But often it's just their mindset that if a man isn't oggling over them  and showing them affection or lust then they aren't worthy or loved. Something went wrong in their childhood, whether parents failed to help their daughter feel worthy on her own merits or  mixing with the wrong crowd, low self-esteem issues.. am talking about in societies where the girl/women has a choice to be subservient or not, where the laws protect girls against abuse.. in some countries they have no choice.

I saw nothing wrong in what the woman who came out in the g-string did in the video if he respects her intellectually, as nothing wrong with a couple having a good sex life and both want the same thing, but I am dead against girls/women being subservient to men on any level, wrong for girls to allow that (where they have a choice) and especially wrong for men to expect/force that on them... if it's a little game in the bedroom and the roles also get reversed and it's just a bit of fun and it stops there and it's not voilent then no harm done, but if it's the general way of attitude/behaviour/treatment between a couple then the girl should get out, or the male, as there are cases where women dominate and treat their men like slaves.. but as we all know it is predominantly men doing it to women.. and it is a far greater problem in some countries. e.g in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, just to name a couple, where so many women basically have no rights and are abused and tortured all the time and are slaves. They are the women I really feel sorry for because even if they want to get out of that horrendous way of life they can't :(

Just hope and pray things will slowly change there over time, but it can only change if women can get into Government and help change the laws. At the moment that is very difficult for them to do, banned, but that's because women didn't fight hard enough for it.. they need  to  band together and form a solidarity against men.. power in numbers..  then maybe we can start to see laws changing, at the moment their laws protect the men and allow men to abuse women and women who protest or report abuse are  not listened to or protected. Am constantly reading articles on the net of shocking cases of abuse, torture,  beatings, rape against girls and women in the middle east.. some as young as 9 are being FORCED to marry men in their 50s.. this is paedophilia.. unbelievable it is allowed and the girl has no rights to stop it. :(

On a positive there are 'some' women who are standing up and trying to fight for the rights of women in these countries, having the guts to do it.. going to take a long time before it makes a real difference with much  more women following suit, but I have 'more' hope now that change will happen there.

chess_kebabs

The message being sent in the winning video was that the guy was THAT addicted to chess.com  he could resist something that most men wouldn't 'normally' be able to resist.. so that part was just to show how irresistable chess.com is.. so the actual concept of trying to make chess.com look completely irresistable is the clever part, but perhaps it could have been done in a different way.. one that would have been suitable for kids to watch.. e.g. having to choose between playing another chess game or going to a baseball game with his mates.. had his mates calling him saying they scored free tickets to the grand final of their favourite team, something a die hard fan would kill for, and the game starts in just half an hour! And he says yes to coming but then accepts the rematch. It would have been just as clever and worthy of winning (if well produced) and appropriate for all members of the site to watch.

chess_kebabs

I can predict what some responses will be..

"Yeah, but not as much fun!"

ok true for many ADULTS, I can't disagree with that.

but being a mum I can't help but think of what's right for kids to see..

TheCabal
It's funny how much time people spend discussing a user-made contest-video who can get easily offended by something like this (what looks like nonsense actoring here in this thread), while they logically must be offended by stuff like this just everywhere, everyday in life. Without this thread here, I wouldn't know of any contest-videos beeing made. Imagine what kids can by accident see on the TV, the internet, outside home... on someones mobile phone... maybe hear some strange things from the other people.
chess_kebabs

@TheCabel, sure kids see things 'by accident'.

But why do staff insist on no sexual avatars or videos to  be posted on profiles  and then go and choose the winning video to be one containing porn?

You don't see anything strange/hypocritical with that?

And kids can see this thread here just as easily as you and I can.. it's not in a private adults only group.

I wasn't offended by the video, I only questioned the validation of it on a family chess site.. how many times in Live chatroom I hear the HELP STAFF or Kohai reminding the members that this is a family site when they are warning members who displayed lude behaviour, deleted their comments.

RookedOnChess

Personally, for me it is not only this kind of content on a family site, but the content, period. This world wants "eye candy" and sex-on-the-brain 24/7. I'm SO sick of it, I can't say enough about it. Just the way there is no longer anywhere on earth you can breathe clean air...there is virtually nowhere you can live in a "clean" world in this way. It's pathetic that sex, on some level or another, has to be brought into it. The fact that the word "sexy" is now used all over the place, as a subsitute for words like "attractive" or "appealing" or whatever when talking about or referring to things that have absolutely NOthing to do with "sex appeal", is a small example of the continuous permeation. If sex isn't in there somewhere, it's simply not "complete" enough. You can't even walk out your door without seeing people flaunting things that should be concealed or left for the privacy of one's own home. Everything now is about flaunting and sex appeal. I fear for my grandchildren and how low their mentality will stoop, since we already live in a world where almost anything goes and is acceptable :(

TheGrobe

Hey, wait a minute, aren't you here because of sex?

RookedOnChess

LOL Grobe...not the point actually. Sex can be a precious, amazing thing, but it will always be my opinion that it doesn't belong plastered everywhere and in everything.

chess_kebabs

I don't find that is the case always RookedonChess, but yes granted, sometimes it is.
