Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

Sort:
Sooner

This discussion descended to the depths of fatuousness long ago. The results of the vote are overhwhelmingly clear: Correspondence chess by 53% with turn-based chess coming in a distant second at a mere 18%. Isn't it time to accept and implement those results and move on to other things? With all the work left to be done on this new user interface, surely Erik and his staff have better things to spend their time and effort on, don't you think?

Well if '' correspondence-chess '' considered old-fashioned.

Suppose '' e-mail-chess '' more up-to-date ?

Salut !

( & no bad-jokes about ''snail-chess'' also having connections to the French. )

Okay will not repeat kborg's comment but how about :

Cyber Chess ?

Metastable

It seems that, witty remarks aside, a few strong themes have emerged in this discussion, and I find myself in agreement with all of them. Namely:

- The word "online" is a confusing choice. Anything you play on a website is, by definition, "online". Avoid this name.

- The term "turn-based" is also a confusing choice. Any game of chess is, again by definition, turn-based. Also avoid this name.

- The name "correspondence chess" is widely understood within the community. It's only drawback is a possible connotation to the uninitiated of physical mail.

- Making up a fancy name so that it makes advertising focus groups happy is just as likely to turn off serious players as is it to attract neophytes.

So I'm going with the old standby of "correspondence chess".

Well my very early suggestion of Paced Chess says exactly what it is, but granted it doesn't have a very catchy ring to it.

Still like cChess the best. It looks snazzy and is an abbreviation for what it is... modernizes the term Correspondence Chess.

Daily Chess doesn't say what it is, just says we can play every day.. we can play Live chess and OTB chess every day too if we want. It's intended meaning doesn't shine through.

Agree Babs & see also post no. 235.

Snazzy is what we need !

Otherwise are stuck with '' correspondence-chess '' until next time Halley's Comet passes by.

netzach

cChess iChess etc should be added to vote-panel.

unohoo

I can agree with cChess also

Circular arguments for sure. If job description is:

New title/name sought for easy identification/location of chess & chess variants around the site. This is to be succinct & easily undestood.

Then perhaps re-naming them all is the answer ?

Is only a '' label '' to assist navigation of site after all.

So could have: cChess iChess 960Chess etc ?

Without deep & wordy explanation. Expect users will click on them to discover within any further detail...

Yes, nice snazzy consistency there Aidan, I like it. Is iChess supposed to  be Internet Chess, representing Live chess? As I didn't get that connection.

netzach

hmm perhaps iChess should be LChess.. :)

chess_kebabs

better. :)
