Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

I think it's quite clear that Erik doesn't want the "right name" for it.. He wants a name that is catchy/fun.  He already has the right name and wants to change it, clearly for marketing purposes. :)

Yes, I agree. In that case change to a suitable pair as has been suggested here before:

eg - Long play chess, short play chess

Long chess, short chess

Slow chess, fast chess

One-stop chess, multi-play chess

Anyway, that's my last last 2 cents on this forum, it's getting kinda tedious (and that's NOT a suggestion btw Wink).

Imo, marketing sucks when it messes with logic.

Tell that to McDonalds Brad, and then look at the sales figures for McHappy Meals.  Are customers buying a McHappy? What the hell is a  McHappy? I don't know but customers are buying millions a day around the world...

And we all know what else sells really well... but  we won't go there. :)

We all know what Erik already calls it.......

Profitable chess.

There's more to life than "sales" and that is where society has messed up badly imo.  In the last 50-60 years society has degraded to being moral, selfless, considerate, focused on service, helping others and keeping customers happy to the almighty dollar, to hell with others, the most important thing is you and money.

Look at McDonalds then.  Yes, they sell.  Big deal.  What is their reputation like?  McChucks anyone?  High quality food is it??  No, it's just fast and convenient.

Don't try to change my mind on this... this is another topic that doesn't need to be hijacked.

Well Erik isn't trying to sell an unhealthy commodity/product or service, like McDonalds does, so the 2 really can't be compared on that level. Was just giving an example of where a catchy word or words can work to help make the cash registers start singing more loudly...

My personal opinion is I don't want to see the name changed. And for the same reason I didn't like 'some' of the changes made in the new site..   and that is that chess is a very classy/beautiful/prestigious/intelligent game, so let's keep the environment/platform respecting/honouring that class/beauty/prestige/intelligence.   If it MUST change, the only other name I would  vote for is cChess.. because it is catchy, it does 'look' cool/snazzy/modern and it is still representing what it is.

Just cos you went platinum, aint nothin to do with luck, it just means that a million people are stupid as f88K.

Bex1p

unfortunately, to the  business there is nothing more important than sales except for perhaps the prospect of repeated sales.

Sex-with-your-computer, chess?

And MCO-Chess, instead of Live Chess?

I didn't get your point here. Or more I didn't understand what you're saying here.

In post revolutionary america they did actually rename the king 'president' but it didnt catch. Someone earlier on commented saying they didnt care for the history or tradition of the game. That's their opinion, but I disagree strongly. Chess' rich and varied history adds a whole other level to the game that if taken away reduces the game to a rather bleak world, void of culture or legacy...

I was talking about the term correspondence chess which isn't the game.

And of which the history of mailing a move to someone has little to do with the current way it's played online now. The only similarity is that there is a delay between moves. And even that isn't forced. You can easily play a full game within a few minutes if you wanted.

Christ guys its chess thats it, heres a wild one, lets call it chess. It doesnt matter if you play a game in 5mins, 10years, blindfolded, via carrier pigeon, on a screen, on a board, on the floor of a masonic lodge or via telepathy its just chess no matter what wrapping paper its in, i think people get that.

Alternatively we could go with corporate chess, or drop chess altogether.

I quite like the idea of just 'Chess'

Are you guys being serious? Go into a restaurant and order "food". See how well that works.

Oh how I wish I could create polls like this to survey groups that I admin.

'Correspondence' is the only correct term here.  I call it OLC (online correspondece) despite what chess.com currently calls it... whatever it is atm.

I voted for "Correspondence Chess", even though that is ambiguous and could be confused with the snail-mail based correspondence chess of yesteryear.

None of the other terms is adequate.

Email chess. ... what part of it is using e-mail?

Echess... what part of any of this is NOT e(lectronic)?

Slow Chess... doesn't differentiate between long live games and OLC can also be played pretty fast if both players are online and moving.

Daily Chess.  Inaccurate description, since a game could be done in under a day or may have one move in a fortnight, neither of which is 'daily'.

Turn chess and turn based chess... yeah, what other kind of chess is there?  Real time chess just doesn't work!

Unfortunately, clear and accurate terms that are grounded in tradition fail to serve the needs of marketing. Chess.com is a young site, but rapidly grew to become the most popular online chess playing site. Marketing explains the success.

OTOH, and perhaps the marketing department should consider this difference, Chess.com has a smaller percentage of strong players (those in the upper 20%). On this site, I am typically in the upper 2-3% across all rating groups. On the other site where I play most regularly, I am in the top 16%. Compare these to my USCF rating: top 7% nationally, top 14% in my state.

Even though the total number of players rated above me is slightly higher at this site than at my other regular site, they comprise a much smaller proportion of the whole.

The success of this site s due to its ability to attract casual players.

"Calendar Chess" will be clear to the masses.  Very good choice by the The Grobe.  +1

"Online Chess" still confuses me, but what do I know?
