Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

Sort:
k9p

as its all online and in essence its all corrispodence chess  perhaps the only difference is in the time allocated, one type measured in hours or minutes per game the other in days per move.

one is cant go to  sleep need to move,

the other allows a few z's between moves, so i suggest and chess with z's or ZZChess

and forgive the bad amphetamine pun

speed chess

Live chess would perhaps be better named fluid chess, whereas there is no need to change on-line chess although i think both are fine as they are.

Well, let's say that I have apples to sell and I go with them to the market. Someone asks:

" How much are the apples?"

I answer:

" They are not apples, they're plas."

What do you think will happen? More than 50% of those who ask will go somewhere else to buy apples. After all, I told them clearly that I don't have apples, but plas.

If everyone knows that the game is called correspondence chess, what is the reason to call it differently? To make sure that you don't attract serious CC players who will not bother understanding the rules of "daily chess" or "online chess" or whatever?

Any new season plas available?

The reason Erik wants to call it a different name is to find a name that will attract the larger market of players, which are not the serious CC players  but the more casual players.

btw, I don't see how changing the name is really going to make any difference. They only see the name after they've joined the site... they're here already.. unless it will help non premium members of the site become premium members because the name is more appealing ?

Unless there is outside advertising of the site and it's features going on which will feature the new  name of CC ?

This we agree on. Cart before the horse? Casual players want to play chess and will look for a site where they can play chess, new fangled terminology may deter them from joining the site and encourage them to buy a board lots of people do not like change, im not adverse to it but change for a reason.

I was unaware of 960 til i came here though and and accidently joined a 960 tournament, perhaps you could and should focus on that as a selling point.

In technical terms, Online Chess is asychronous chess (like email and correspondence), i.e., both players don't have to be there at the time when one of them moves -- which is mostly not the case with Live Chess (or OTB chess, for that matter), which itself is synchronous.

Now, if only 10% of users would know what correspondence chess is, I'll reckon that only 10% of those 10% would be able to grasp the distinction between asynchronous and synchronous...  But if people can think of better (i.e., more widely known and well understood) words to describe that difference of synchrony, it does represent the fundamental distinction between the two main types that this site offers.

Perhaps Erik's "daily chess" approaches the right imagery reasonably well...

Reviving something on page 2:

Asynchronous chess is a succinct yet elegant way to describe what is currently named "online chess". The title says it all--the simulatneous presence of both players is not required to play! Who cares if neither the ICC or FIDE people thought of it before? The title works, and would do its job well.

You make a good case.

For those who don't know what correspondence chess means, it really makes no difference how it is called.

Well, let me tell you something: once, discussing briefly with someone on ICC after a game, I told him that I play correspondence chess here. He said he gave up CC but on this site you can't play CC: it's turn-based chess. Do you see the point? One strong player turned away because of the name. This may be the opinion outside chess.com: on this site we don't play correspondence, but some chess variant called "turn-based" (a funny name, obviously chess is turn-based). There are hundreds of chess variants...

No matter what name it's called, Correspondence Chess or a kitchy new name, most won't know what it means unless you give a one liner brief explanation. Seriously, how hard is that to do. Clears up any confusion.

In order not to cheapen or denigrate the noble tradition of the '' Game of Kings '', perhaps the answer lies simply in maintaining that whilst using smaller type-size as the prefix ?

I also found out what 960 was the hard way. Brings back bad memories. lol.

P.S. I definitely agree with you Bex1p, don't mind change for a 'good' reason.

I like your thinking Aidan, again.

Also I love that word asynchronous, the sound of it is very harmonious.

But don't forget Erik wants a name that the larger market of casual players are going to get. If they can't get 'Correspondence' they ain't going to get 'Asynchronous' (unless a description is added).

Would you believe that i am still in that very same 960 tournament that started in march last year?

Suspicion breeds paranoia :)

A description isn't going to kill anyone. What would have a greater chance of turning off serious and casual players alike would be an ambiguous title that would confuse new users, or perhaps even suggest ignorance on the part of the site makers (no offense intended, just pointing out why a name change would be good for the site).

Bex1p

Go for it, im in the 3rd round and doing much better than i imagined i would  after initially going "what the hell is with the board!"
