Dear Babs, the only thing that Erik's preferences tells us is that Erik must follow your example and reconsider his preferences... Education and Tradition are not four-letter words - it is our responsibility to pursue and preserve them, so we can say what we mean and thus mean what we say. Btw, how old are you?... Just curious where that -10 would leave you at... :)

It would put me in  my 20's Himath, but nearer the top end.. am 38 now..  :)

He`ll get you one time when you fully expect to win, then there`ll be another and another, i got my mrs into chess and now i struggle to beat her, she joined this site and now so do most others.

That's great that your Mrs plays, my husband never learned. I tried to teach him once  but he gave up very fast.. but he's never been into board games or card games or any kind of games, not his thing. He prefers telly, fishing and cars... you can see by the cars album on my  profile how cars are his hobby by the huge number of different cars we've owned..  only game he will play is table tennis, which we used to set up inside on the dining table.

I wish he liked chess as I get bored watching tv, except for a few shows I like. He likes the mindlessness of watching tv..  I like it/need that too sometimes, but can't sit and watch something am not interested in.. and most of what's on tv is rubbish/boring.  But I do watch a few shows with him that I don't particular love just to be sociable til I am completely bored and then will come and play chess. lol

I agree wholeheartedly.

Letters and emails.

Again, Online Correspondence Chess would be a better term since Correspondence chess isn't what's played here.

A better name might be Multi-Day Chess. While some may argue that they can't understand what that means, I suggest they look up what multiple and days are in a dictionary.

Also are there any serious players on this site? I'm playing people rated at 1700 that are making moves a 1300 or less player in a 10 minutes long live chess game would make. My only explantion for that is they are playing over 50 games at a time and putting no real thought into their moves.

TheGrobe

Asynchronous Turn-Based Multi-Day Online Corespondence Chess.

Also Correspondence is linked more with distance. Correspondence course, News Correspondent.

Wiki definition:

A correspondent or on-the-scene reporter is a journalist or commentator, or more general speaking, an agent who contributes reports to a newspaper, or radio or television news, or another type of company, from a remote, often distant, location.

It's not unsurprising that in German (post #653) it means distance.

TheGrobe

Correspond Online Momentarily For Your Chess (C.O.M.F.Y. Chess)

TheGrobe

Actually, Momentary Chess isn't too bad.

You had me worried for a moment there, Babs... You are a toddler!

Something that we shouldn't lose sight of here is that this is a market survey and not a democratic process.

..... I thought these two were synonymous.

No, Erik can choose whatever he likes regardless of the outcome here.  He's kind enough to give us input, but smart enough to make sure the final call is his.

Speaking of casual players, here's a comment by someone on another site when he couldn't figure out a chess puzzle where the answer was an en passant move.  "En passant--  Not everyone plays this way, it is an unfair puzzle for those of us who do not."

No, a market survey is finding out what people want. A democratic process is giving the people the illusion they got what they want.

The rule was only introduced a few hundred years ago. Some people just don't like change.

Both of those names work...

En passant is a universal rule in chess, anyone can do it in any game like castling, if you choose not to do it when it will give an advantage then you weaken your chances.

How about "one-on-one chess played through a server at a time control of between 1 and 14 days a move"?  That has a nice catchy ring to it, although I'm not sure if it would fit on those menus up there. Wink

chess_kebabs

too short Riga... :)

rigamagician

How about Corr Chess then?

chess_kebabs

sounds like gorgeous.. hehe
