Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

Look, in defense of chess_kebabs...she is no cheater and your accusation is nothing less than slander...if she was even slightly inclined, I would be putting shrimp on her  barbi right now!  But she is not.  She is just a really nice, smart, woman who is happily married to one of the luckiest men in the world...so back off "TheGrobe."

chess_kebabs

Thanks Dennis but Grobe isn't insinuating that I myself am cheating, he thinks I am supporting cheating on this site because I want to see a separate rated Centaur pool here for all those players who like to play using engines.

chess_kebabs

And if you were trying to be funny Dennis, haha :)

Here is my take on using computer programs to play chess:  DON'T DO IT!  A player who uses assistance to win a game and inflate a rating is making a big mistake.  There is always a better, smarter, younger, quicker player out there.  Even Bobby did not win every game.  So, the real game, from my point of view, is the game inside of you.  The real fun, for me, is having that "ah ha" experience of seeing the best move and the satisfaction of understanding.  For simple minds, chess is about ratings and ego, but the pleasure of chess can be more.  The pleasure of chess is not in measuring yourself against another person...it is measuring yourself from where you were to where you are.

Paranoia over engine use is the reason I will NOT play here. If you are able to play two reasonable moves in a row and manage not to lose a piece every ten moves on this site you must be using an engine and will get grief for same. I play where engines are allowed and thus avoid silly accusations despite not using assistance. My rating is not huge over there but anyone foolish enough to measure their ability by any form of rating is probably too stupid to be left in charge of a pair of legs.

I still would not play here if separate pools were introduced. That would likely just heighten the paranoia because some would choose to play in both pools and I doubt that many would understand the relative nature of ratings.

They wouldn't be able to play in both pools Syrtis, unless they had 2 separate accounts that staff were not aware of. But the one username would only have access to one pool.

We all know engine use is rife here.. that it's very popular.. staff can keep booting/banning them, they will just keep coming back into that same pool. Give them their own pool to play in and leave the main pool for non-engine users. And of course am not silly to think that all engine users will do the right thing and play in the engine pool, but many will.. that's a certain number less engine users the non-engine users need to worry about facing.

It won't stop the silly asses worrying about it though. I'll stick to the engine legal site. At least I can get a good game without my opponent worrying himself to death over what I might or might not be using. Beer and and ancient deities are my favourite forms of assistance but sadly neither work very well.

And the forum quoting system needs some serious work!

Well I assume your preference is to play using engines if you're playing there and not playing here. If not using them here in the main pool then there is no need to worry about anyone. Staff cannot find anyone is cheating/using engines if they're not. Sure, other players can suspect and scream cheat, but at the end of the day staff are the ones who will say yay or nay.

chess_kebabs

Well if not using an engine then you shouldn't worry about anyone else here.. let whoever accuses you remain paranoid, it's their problem. They can't do anything to you anyway. If not using an engine then no one can, why to worry about them? They would probably feel they were right if they saw someone they were accusing of cheating leave the site after the accusations.

chess_kebabs

So would you say you would be more likely to play against engine users here on chess.com than on the legal engine site Syrtis?

I take you are asking if the number of engine users is greater here or there? If so, I have no idea. I haven't played here that much and it was a long time ago. To be honest, I wasn't much concerned with whether or not I was playing an engine user or not, I was more irritated by a couple of accusations from idiots.

I suspect my experience would be much the same as on the other site, everyone reaches a level and the engine users are generally higher than the non-engine users. There will be some overlap due to very good "non-assisted" players being able to hold their own against the less able "engine assisted".

The thing that might surprise some is the range of ratings occupied by those using an engine. One would imagine that most would use the strongest engine available and would therefore be concentrated in a narrow band.

Well you obviously like this site as you're here now, even if not playing.

chess_kebabs

lol

Come here then, I can find you a hole to dig.. a big hole, for a lap pool.. only condition is, I'd need you to also build the lap pool. lol

chess_kebabs

chess_kebabs

Just to drag this whole thing back on topic, I still favour server chess. It's played on a server so that seems apt. Correspondence chess doesn't really work as correspondence suggests people scribing missives with quill pens rather than mucking about with electrons on the interthingy.

'Server Chess' makes me think of tennis...
