Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

Online chess is very misleading to newbies. I would estimate 90% of unrated players will abandon a game because they didn't realize it was correspondence interval

Bardu

Call it what it is, correspondence chess.

I know I did. I didn't understand it was a long-game until after I started playing it. What I wanted to play was "live chess," but I didn't know the terminology yet. Took a little trial and error to figure it out.

Presently, I call the Online games "turn-based" or "long games," a term I also use for the 90/30 time control--but that's just me. Not sure Chess.com would want to adopt those.

Training Chess (TC) or Homework Chess (HC) since the purpose is really to train and improve your game through a slow and gradual  process.

Chess.com you are bloody HOPELESS with follow up.

Eric did not like the response: use the traditional term--correspondence chess.

Oh, give it a rest.  online chess is fine.

Ziryab

I talk about online chess all the time. Some of my online chess is blitz; some is slower "live" chess; some is correspondence.

Ziryab

I'm on board, although I'm more likely to log on and play blitz after the bottle of brandy is empty. So, After Brandy, Standard, 960, After Dinner.

I like your certainty.  Call it what it IS, dammit!

I'm pretty certain "cyberchess" has been suggested Dozens of times and effectively dismissed each time, but you gotta admit it sounds cool.

(And by the way, I'm pretty sure Staff lost interest in this forum Decades ago ... and Rightly So ...Smile  Me, I have an above average tolerance for nonsense, and naturally enjoy others who share this trait.  Pity the Staff who's charged with monitoring forums in which I post.  Sorry, guys, I feel your pain. Cry)

I call it correspondence chess. When I call it "online" chess, I put the "online" in quotes, like I did just there, or capitalize both words - Online Chess - so it is obvious I am talking about the unique chess.com entity.

For the pedants: Just as the definition for "mail" has been updated to include electronic mail, correspondingly (see what I did there?) the definition for correspondence may be assumed to include electronic correspondence.

Ditto.

I did delete one paragraph becuase threads like the recent one concerning Game Explorer reveals endemic confusion concerning either the meaning of "online chess" or its nature. I continue to serve as a welcomer on another site that offers only corrspondence chess (they use that name), and I continue to observe that most of those who start a welcoming game with me never return after the moves made their first day. I suspect most are looking for some form of live chess.

This forum reminds me of the poem--"The Owl-Critic".  Check it out.

Pinot Lisa. The evidence you cite above does not even come close to supporting your bogus accusations.
