You shouldn't let a rating define you or anyone else for that matter. I don't think that being respectful towards someone would be an annoyance though. If they didn't want to chat or hear from others, they can turn it off.
One thing I would say to you would be to have some confidence in yourself. A higher rated player sees your rating and is expecting to win already, they don't need to hear it from you. If you're already planning on losing, you will. Go into it thinking you can legitimately beat this guy and I bet you would play better.
I find that if the server ever pits me against a player rated 1000 or higher (I hover between 450 and 600 on rapid, my preferred mode), I feel the need to greet them in a deferential manner in chat, make it fully clear that they will certainly win, and apologize in advance for being a stupid noob.
Now that I think of it, it's probably more annoying to them than anything else, but does anyone else ever get this way?
