Do you actually say "check" when playing in tournaments?

If I get one illegal move, and my opponent gets 2 minutes added to their clock; that could be a good trade for me.

ex: I move my queen to a square that is one move  away from check mate, with my opponent able to do nothing about it.

I'm guessing that the illegal move is rescinded, the time added to the opponent's clock and we continue from just prior to my illegality?

And do a little celebration dance as you say it, haha...

Yes you have to lean over to your opponent, and shout CHECK! as hard as you can. And if they don't play a move within 5 seconds, repeat until they move.

You're supposed to holler it.  U gotta make sure everybody in the room hears it.  It's customary.

I did once only because it was a mate in 8 and i was actually kinda proud of it.

Did your opponent resign or keep playing? :-)

I remember playing in a tournament where there were 2 young inexperienced players were in a Queen ending and didn't know how to proceed.  Every move you had one kid belt out "CHECK!! over and over.  Eventually the offending kid's dad (who was a master) walked over to him and told him to knock it off.

I don't say it unless in casual games.
An unfortunate occasion in a Quick-Rated USCF tournament a few months back befell me. In a time scramble, pieces were being knocked over, my nerves were screaming, and both of us were blitzing everything, my king was in check for several turns but neither my opponent or I realized it. After the fourth consecutive turn, I moved my king into a square that had my own knocked over pawn in it; I hit the clock and he took my king with his bishop.

Everything was done wrong there, he didn't call an illegal move my stopping the clock (Taking the King is allowed in blitz, not rapid!)  my move shouldn't have been legal because it was my own pawn I moved into, but I ended up getting the loss because I made an illegal move. I wasn't able to get the Arbiter and my desperate argument about the unclear situation was rejected by my opponent and another player that came over.

Of course, he had no obligation to say "check", he didn't even see it until after when we were trying to figure out what happened. But that idea that I had made illegal moves somehow made it all forfeit. Frustrating.

In a draft script of The Queen's Gambit Netflix show all of the characters announced check, but then they gave the script to Gary Kasparov to review and he said "At this level absolutely NOBODY says check"
