I didn't say whether or not X is worth more or less than when he bought it. I said sometimes people buy things because they WANT them, not because they need them. Elon Musk did not NEED Twitter.

My example is like buying a car for your business. You may not NEED a new 100k Cadillac Escalade to haul around your briefcase. But you want it. Even though you know it will instantly go down in value. It's a loss you are willing to accept because you want it. It's just business.

The question the OP asks most likely has to do with the respective level of fame and accomplishments of each. It's really pointless to focus on minutia or perceived flaws of each and compare JUST those flaws. Otherwise we could say no, Magnus is not the Elon Musk of chess because Magnus has bad breath. Elon doesn't. Do you see how silly that sounds?

You obviously aren’t comprehending.

Magnus has a record of being extremely good at chess. To my knowledge he’s done nothing odious to people who work for him, is not publicly abusive to those with no funds to spare for legal action, and he’s not a fascist.

Musk has a record of running businesses into the ground and obtaining government contracts that are tainted by conflicts of interest, among other issues. He’s been saved from bankruptcy by harvesting subsidies. He’s left municipalities in the lurch with incomplete projects. He’s a deadbeat dad who deliberately chose only male embryos for implantation, only to treat an effeminate son with hostility until she came out as trans, at which point he rejected her outright. He manipulates his baby mamas with legal maneuvers and withholding of child support. This list is incomplete.

This is it for my posts on the thread. I presented plenty of examples for anyone to read. There’s far more out in the real world, whether business or technology or general interest.

Ifpateiotgames is pint "but rich or has lots of businesses "

Oh and there's been a slight kiss of death recently for musk

Oh and @ifpatriotgames there's a difference between medeling with millions of people's lives and defending that by going "don't judge " and being really good at something without harming so many people ? Like really at least Magnus is good at something and doesn't have to manipulate people to be good at it

lfPatriotGames

Maybe just ask the OP for clarity then. Is the comparison based on what either one has done that you find objectionable or is it based on their accomplishments? Pick one.

My guess is that it's based on their accomplishments because that is what both are famous for. If that's the case I would say Magnus has a long way to go to catch up to Elon.

If Elon is such a good businessman, why did he have to crawl with hat in hand to the Saudis when he lacked the cash to buy Twitter for the price he offered?

Why did Twitter lose 75% of its value after he bought it?

Because that's how business works. Not every venture is going to be a big winner. Most people in business fail a LOT before they succeed. Also, it's very common for a business to borrow money for purchases.

I recall a comment by, I think Warren Buffet, who said basically if he were to buy a house he would use a 30 year mortgage to do it. Obviously he can afford to buy a thousand houses and pay cash, but he would finance even one. Because of the deductions it makes more fiscal sense to do it that way.

Remember, a smart business person isn't always going to agree with what you or I think they should do.

Bro you can't chalk it up to "that's how business works " the difference it was already a relatively successful company being rich doesn't make you automatically smarter but it lessens the damage done by ALOT

If you are talking to me, I didn't say being rich makes you smarter. I said being smarter makes your rich.

And yes, that IS how business works. Some ventures make money, some break even, and some lose money. I don't think Musk bought Twitter to make money. He bought it because he wanted it. Some people may not like how he does business but he does ok. He's worth about 430 billion. He made 890 million dollars today. Magnus, while clearly the best chess player alive (or maybe ever) simply has not achieved the same accomplishments as Musk. It's just not a good comparison.

Kaeldorn

If you say "Magmusk" you're one step away from Mad Max.

I thought Magnus was a good person.

what does this have tho do with the title of the Forum, "Do you think Magnus is the Elon musk of chess?" comparing them and seeing if one is better does not match what the question means.

Since both are the the best at what they do, we have to assume that's what the question meant. Do Magnus's accomplishments match those of Elon Musks? The OP still hasn't clarified, but we have to assume he's asking if Magnus's brilliance at chess has changed the world in a significant way.

When you say "the Elon Musk" of something you obviously are referring to what he is most famous for. Other than being the richest person in history, his second most famous achievement is what he's done with technology. AI, Tesla, SpaceX, etc.

He took Tesla to where it is NOT to make money, but because he is concerned about Earths future energy sustainability. Not everyone would take the risks he has, just because they are concerned about the future. So is Magnus the "Elon Musk" of chess? Has Magnus made chess a world changing pursuit? Has Magnus brought it to new levels, recognized by everyone, even those who don't play chess?

No, Elon does not stop. Unlike Magnus, who quit the world chess championship schedule, Elon keeps on going. One of his most recent ventures is XAI. That was just a couple years ago.

Is Magnus the Elon Musk of chess? Does Magnus keep on doing new things? Does Magnus take his talents at chess, and used them to bring chess to worldwide attention, even among those who don't even play chess?

Maybe you didn't understand the question. The question is "is Magnus the Elon Musk of chess"?

Politics has nothing to do with it. Magnus happens to be a supporter of the current president, if that's something you care about. But clearly that is NOT what the OP meant. But Elon started a couple companies to help the environment and help with energy sustainability. Magnus has not done that. Again, is Magnus "the Elon Musk of chess"? Has Magnus taken what he knows best, chess, and used it to make the world better in a very significant way?

I was arguing against your example .... And he argument is obviously not about the world it's about chess

If you wanna compare it with who has the most impact in the community that would be gothamchess gamewise tho it's Magnus but they are talking about his impact in chess specifically

Not "what does chess do for everyone else ?"

The question has nothing to do with politics. Politics is fleeting. It changes at a moments notice. What Elon Musk has done through his companies is much more long lasting. He took Tesla to new heights NOT to make money but to revolutionize the electric car business. Look at how many companies now produce electric cars. Almost all of them. A world wide impact in a very big way. SpaceX and his AI companies same thing. He has taken what he knows best, business, and used it to advance technology in a very positive way.

So has Magnus done that? Has Magnus taken what he knows best, chess, and used it to help the entire world? Magnus is a brilliant chess player, like I said maybe the best ever. Has he used that to make a huge beneficial impact on society?
