What is Double Forfeit? many chess player almost never Encounter this on Chess.com, So Let's talk About it. A double forfeit in chess.com refers to a situation where both players are disqualified or lose the game simultaneously. This typically happens when both players run out of time, or if both players violate the rules (like abandoning the game or using illegal assistance). In terms of time control: If both clocks reach zero in blitz or bullet games, it can result in a double forfeit because neither player won within the allotted time. It's an unusual result since normally one player wins when the opponent runs out of time, but in certain cases, both can forfeit.

It's not possible to have both players run out of time here and OTB if both clocks are out of time because the clock wasn't stopped and the win claimed, then it's a draw.

Here, if both players get disconnected then it can also be a draw.

What happens if both players forfeit (resign) simultaneously? I don't know if that's possible online but in OTB it sure seems possible.

It just happened to me now. This is maybe the first time it did and it looks ultra rare

It sure seems possible to whom?

In OTB, a double forfeit can occur if it is determined that both players have „fixed” the game, say by playing a prearranged set of moves.

This happened a few years ago when Nepomniatchi and Dubów played a prearranged draw in the FIDE World Blitz Tournament.

Anyone who has observed competition between competitors. Sometimes timed events end in a tie.

There was a game between Magnus and Hikaru where one resigned in a winning position. People make mistakes. So what would happen if both players (for whatever reason) resign at literally the identical moment?

There is no 0-0 result in chess, with just a couple of exceptions:

- Both players do not appear at the playing hall in time.

- The players are both penalized (like in #14) for result fixture/defamation of the sport.

OK, so both players not showing up and both players agreeing to fix the result are examples. What about both players truly believing they cannot win and resign simultaneously? What happens in that case?

Would the score be 0-0 or would there be a simultaneous resignation tie breaker, like whose turn it might be?

There's no such thing as a double forfeit.

You keep repeating this "resign simultaneously" as it was a thing. How could that happen? You surely have something in your mind, but I have no idea what can that be.

At some point they may start arguing like "I was the first to resign the game, you fool!", and the arbiter deciding on forfeiting both to stop the noise.
