Ethics of designing my own chess engine and playing it on rated play.

Hello everyone. Before we go deeper, no I am not insisting on using an engine to cheat on games. I would like to one day design my own chess engine. I have no intention on it beating Stockfish or Fritz, I would simply like to take on the challenge. I am currently a neurosciences major, and before I go on to med school, I would to take a few years to study computer sciences, and in that time as I said, I would like to design my own chess engine. I think it would be a great way to apply both fields of my studies, on top of just being a good fun. With the end goal being to design and engine that is appropriate for beginner and intermediate players that doesn't play the same openings or make silly blunders constantly.

So now the critical part. Play testing. Chess.com makes it clear that using a computer in a rated game for assistance is cheating. It is without question. But what about JUST a computer? The biggest issue is that this has the potential to heavily disadvantage players on the site, though doubtful considering the work that goes into most chess engines, and I am only one man.  I also realize I could scrimmage against other computers, but this wouldn't give me a 'true' rating on how well the engine performs.

So in a purely hypothetical situation, what could be done to make this happen if the time comes? Sharing my work with chess.com and remaining 100% transparent? Should I just set the idea aside? I would like both the opinions of players on this, as well as an chess.com admins or mods if possible.

Look forward to your responses!

Make it happen and then talk.  That is one big hypothetical.

Interesting challenge you've set yourself. May I interest you in a worthwhile enterprise? I started a thread on this site in the general section a few days ago titled "Cashing Chess Skill". Thats how I found this thread, i have been scouring this site looking for ideas that are in sync with that one. I ask that you pop in and share your thoughts if you are so inclined.
