You know what's really amazing about this thread? It's been there for 7 years, and so far only 1 person who has posted in it has had his account banned/ deleted (before you open the thread, next to the title it says 23 comments. In reality there r 22 (not including mine), which means that 1 account that commented no longer exists).

As I said elsewhere, I believe this may well be the oldest thread on the site.

And now it's even older. ;)

The moderation of posts in the forums is too often arbitrary.  Get rid of the moderators, and switch to a system that allows individual members to unsubscribe from other individual members, as is done in Facebook (the default would be that initially every member sees all other members' posts).

I don't think you know how much spam you would see if there were no moderators.

You would see a LOT.

What do you mean "would see"?  Roughly half of what I see now is IMO spam (especially the off-handed humor and personal flame wars).  And I often see political jabs even though these are supposedly prohibitted.  If you're more worried about the commercial spammers who want to sell devices for enlarging body parts, chess.com could use the same spam filters as Google mail, which are amazingly effective.

I wanted to create  alex.mauzon@chess.com address but got an error.

chess.com told me they had stopped handing out e-mail addresses.

Yeah, how dare anyone try to have a little fun around here.

I'm not against fun.  What's a fun joke to one person is spam to another, and vice versa.  My original point was that we should let the inividual member decide which other members they want to remove from their live feed.  Those who enjoy the fun/political/religious posts would still see them even if I chose to screen them out.  Wouldn't this system of individual choice and maximum freedom be preferable to the present system in which censors, I mean moderators, arbitrarily decide what gets through?

BigOto

Moderators decide based on whether or not a post is in accordance with the rules. Please take a moment to review what they are - many people get their posts booted for religious or political content (which should be discussed on the Open Discussion forum).

I think this is a great site to play chess. Can Erik create a checkers site like it?
