FIDE is really useful only for over the board tournaments. You can go to FIDE.com and you will find listings for tournaments around the world. However, most of the tournaments listed are for advanced players.

I assume that you will be looking for over the board tournaments near where you live.
I would check it out. It will post tournaments in your area. They will tell you what you need.
