One of the hardest and most interesting chess puzzles that I've seen is a variant:

White to play and self-mate. White tries to mate himself.

White is trying to FORCE Black to mate him, while Black is trying his best to AVOID mating White.

There is only ONE solution to that self-mate puzzle.

Any mis-step leaves White unable to force a self-mate.

For example, if White plays 1. Rc8? as his first move, Black answers with 1. ... Be4! and draws.
