Game Small Talk, anyone?

I wish there were more trophies you could give someone after they've lost a game...I find them quite limited.

The ones on page 5 and 6 seem to be possibilities: 'Second place', 'Small difference', 'Almost there', 'Optimism', 'Enthusiasm', 'Shakespeare' and 'Tough Nut'. Also some on page 3: 'Great Defense', 'Strong Fortress' and 'Exhausting Game'.

I gave "Brilliant Tactical Play" to my losing opponent recently; it was received with suspicion.

... possibly percieved as taunting. Someone feeling the sting of defeat may not take your compliment the way it was intended.

Chatting during a game with friends is one thing, but if you're in a tournament or a rated game with someone you don't know it becomes a form of gamesmanship.

Kernicterus

Ok, I guess I don't mean discussing things that are coming in the game...unless the desire is to coach, like Karl does.  Just a little friendly banter that says we both know what's up.  lol.  My point is diluted, I think.

Art...I never make it all the way to the fourth, fifth, or sixth pages...thanks for telling me about those trophies.

Helipacter

I love a good chat, me. Though I also, quite perversely, like the strangely icy one or two word replies from those who think that I'm trying to psyche them out by asking them where they're from, or how the weather is.

Truth be told, I wish more people would try and talk about the way the game is going. I've only ever had one game-related comment during a game, and that was from someone telling me that my attempts to save my queen were futile, as she was going to be in his pocket within a move or two.

Needless to say, if there is anyone out there who wants to give me some free coaching/advice, I'm more than willing to accept challenges from you!!!

The Essential Chess Types scheme was one idea for matching like-minded souls - though it didn't guarantee that players would be chatting about the game at hand.

I love having a bit of banter during a game as long as it's just harmless fun. After all that's why I'm here. A good Idea would be to start a group "Chatty Chess" or something, for players who like to talk about their games.

I would love that except I suspect I would be forced into polite conversation about a million other things too.  Perhaps a group of "game talk"...I'd join it.

Both groups could be set up and they could form a fierce rivalry

Sometimes I give trophies to people I've not even played!

Now that's being generous! Laughing

Matches between the Strong Silent Group and the Weak Noisy Group would be more entertaining.

This can be interesting - but it changes the dynamics of the game. e.g.

"I'm moving this knight as a distraction from the trap I'm preparing on e6."

I think they're a good idea, and teach you not to try making cheap moves like that.

Atos

I usually say 'hi' to my opponents. I don't usually say 'gl' since I am not sure what that means in the context of a chess game, but if they say it I'll probably say "u 2" or something. I might say 'gg' after the game if I think that it was a good game, or sometimes 'thnx'. Anything beyond that is too much talking.

I don't blame him.  C'mon...he lost and it was "brilliant"?  lol

He had the misfortune to meet an opponent who was super-brilliant on the day.

When I reach the heady heights of your rating, I'll consider making more expensive moves.

one of the things that irritates me is the way some players say gg when they have won even if the game has been full of blunders!

tarikhk

i agree, underbank, in my head I think, "really? good game?" but in reality I type gg.

It's irritating all right.

dsmeaton

interesting ...

i don't "chat" much ... although i do chat about regular banter with friends.

however, since i travel a lot, i sometimes start a conversation based on my opponent's country. either that i've visited it or want to.

i played a guy from iran, we started chatting, i told him i'd visit iran soon and we've been chatting/playing regular games since. we're chess buddies!!

i don't really like trophies. i don't know why. and i don't tend to talk chess much in chat. it's usually travel/country based (which is fun).

one thing i don't like about chess.com is that after a game is finished, i don't know if a person posts anything in the chat section, like 'good game' or 'why did you make that move?' ... it'd be good to know (maybe via a flashy icon or something) if someone commented in a chess game after the game was finished.

i might try more chess talk. i try to play people higher than me, so it's probably a good way to learn.

@ afaf - i tried to challenge you, since we're of similar rank, but you're not accepting challenges!! :( ... if you read this and feel like a game, throw me a challenge (5 day minimum, cause i travel a lot!!)
