You can only receive them from your game opponents. Sending some might result in getting some back. I received most of mine from Daily games; not sure I got any from live opponents.

Game trophies are awarded for placing in the top 3 in a tournament with a minimum number of participants. Fun trophies (badges) are given by other members.
