Get rid of Vacation?

Years ago under an old account, I went on vacation for 3 weeks.  I went to London to site see.  I plainly posted a message:  "I am currently on vacation for the next 3 weeks.  I am in London site seeing."  Did that stop people from accusing me of stalling, cheating, trying to force them to quit. etc.?  Of course not.

People dont read. They dont comprehend.  They react emotionally.  So yea...use your vacation as you wish.  Its yours to use....until you use it up.

This is a tough one. I hate it too when I am in the middle of a daily game and my opponent "disappears" for a few weeks with no time counted against them.

The challenge with eliminating the vacation altogether is that when you start a daily game, you literally have no idea how many days, weeks, or months it will last.

For example, let's suppose you sign up for a 3-day time limit daily game. (That's essentially six days for every full turn - one white and one black). That means that a single game can easily last for 8 or more months, very easily.

What if you planned a trip someone late in the Summer, but started such a game early in the year? You might think no problem, but that game could very easily (even likely) span the time you went on your trip. depending upon where you went, how busy the trip schedule was, internet access availability, etc. you may not have the ability to make moves (or even the desire to want to). Maybe you went to Italy, met the love of your love, and want to spend all your time walking together around vineyards wine tasting?  without such vacation option, you just lost all games in progress.

Yeah i know. Enough said on this topic. It kind of comes down to how you enjoy playing. I prefer that games not get stale, that's all. That's why i do a daily game. I love the site though. 😊

As far as I'm concerned, the problem is with the way the vacation system is programmed.

I don't have a problem with someone who normally makes their moves promptly, but then has to take a week or two off for some personal reason. The folks that irritate me are the ones who take 2 days and 23 hours every turn - and it's doubly irritating if they won't respond to conditional moves without waiting another 2 days and 23 hours, even when their reply should be immediately obvious.

In non-daily games, if you want to have lots of time for the endgame, you need to play the opening quickly. I'd like to have a similar system for daily game vacations: if you want to take two weeks off for whatever reason, fine. Build up your vacation time by making a bunch of moves very quickly, so you have two weeks of time saved up on your clock.

Unfortunately, that's not how the clock works in daily games. If it's at all feasible to rewrite the code to install that type of system, I would be strongly in favor of doing so.

When I used to play correspondence chess, you could simply write pre-moves, such as:

Nxf6.  If exf6 Qa5+. If a4 Ng7. If Bxf6 Qd3. This would help the game go a lot faster, esp. for obvious retakes.  It would be nice to have such a feature here. Instead, If I take his Q, I have to wait 24 hours + his vacation add to get his reply. LOL.

We do have that option, I use it all the time. There's a tab for conditional moves.

oh wow. I didn't know that! Let me try it

OP’s points are valid. If they’re going to offer a “no vacation” option to tournaments, I see no reason why regular players who are only interested in playing daily games without vacations- shouldn’t have the *option* to play other people with the same preferences. The functionality isn’t that hard for the platform to set up. There’s no reason it has to be black and white one way or the other. Everyone here arguing otherwise is being an @ss.

I know from my own experience how annoying it is when you're in the middle of a good game, and your opponent suddenly goes on vacation. Even though this thread is old, it's still a problem today. One thing that helps me pass the time is planning my next trip. If you're into cruising, you might want to check out this handy departing cruises calendar. It’s a great way to see if there's a cruise from Hamburg that fits your schedule.
