I never have. Anybody got a cool story?

Eseles

i've never met one, but i played one on this site

it's not a very cool story, but i can share it if you like

( i have a 1.5 - 0.5 score over him xD )

i also just started a game with an IM (no moves made yet, actually, and the game is unrated)

[i think threads get more replies after they get one]

Recently I had GM Keith Arkell over 50s World Champion visit our chess club in his tour of the area

Radical_Drift

Yes! I met GM Varuzhan Akobian, and I asked him about Kramnik's quote on Karpov in his interview on the world champions. He said something along the lines of, "Don't think about it too hard."

Yeah, played in a 6-player simul against the Aussie GM Ian Rogers. I eventually tried for a perpetual by sacrificing a couple of pieces, but he avoided it and won. I discovered after the game that I had played the same line of the Sveshnikov against him that he played against Kasparov as a junior.

I have no cool stories, unfortunately. But this is the closest I'll probably ever be to a GM:

About a year ago the largest town in my area (Idrija) decided to make a remembrance plate for GM Vasja Pirc (originator of Pirc Defense), who was born there.

Slovenian #3 GM Jure Škoberne played a 10-board simul that day. I was one of the opponents, together with MSC157 (his blog about the event). It was terrible to play him - I just couldn't get comfortable in my game. Laughing

 Here's my game:

WanderingPuppet

first GM ever met: GM Hikaru Nakamura with PSU chess teammates at 2006 National Chess Congress.  he asked about some of our ratings instead of our names, and hearing that I was unrated, he said "Oh... patzer."  This lack of tact I did not mind.  He did seem to approve of my dinner selection at Ruby Tuesdays.

first GM ever played at standard rated chess:  GM Magesh Panchanathan at Dean of Chess Academy.  Very friendly and pleasant guy and managed to dispatch me with minimum attention to our game until my time pressure and then focused very well in the late middlegame and endgame to dispatch me.  Insightful postgame analysis and he breaks down positions very well in simple terms.  Also has outstanding insights and ability to follow games of his students in great detail in which he is not playing even when playing top class players.  For instance,he had many insights in my game with one of his students at many pts in that game and noticed where mistakes were made at several pts, and understood the flow of the game (who was better in positions at what pt), despite being busy with his own game and following other the games of his students and the games on higher boards as well.  He has done the Your Games Analyzed show on chess.com tv in the past.

first GM played at standard controls:  GM Larry Christiansen, 2011 USATE.  I was very excited to play one of my chess heroes.  After I blundered at time control in an evening game,in a somewhat worse position for me in a Benoni I resigned after 3 1/2 hours of play, he was tired, but relented to analyze with me for what he said he would analyze for 10 minutes (he put his hands up to emphasize 10).  But when analyzing he became more animated and we analyzed and talked chess for at least a 1/2 hour.

I played in a simul against someone you wouldn't believe when I was 12, and Kavalek when I was 14. After I moved to New York when I was 18, GM's were pretty thick on the ground, and they would happily take your money playing  5 minute, and longer games if you got to know them. Dzindziaschvili crashed on my couch once after a poker night where he lost his stake, I beat Adam Kuligowski once (had to be a blunder) in Washington Square, whereupon he proceeded to stomp me four in a row, and I took a few lessons with Anatoly Lein. Right when I moved to New York, there was a snarky kid about 12 who was very strong... he grew up to be GM Max Dlugy. Joel Benjamin was around the Manhattan CC a lot, too. However, I've never played a tournament game with a GM. We all know what the outcome would be from that!

Who was the person you played at 12?

PEPEPTIUM

My 6 years old daughter was playing against Judit Polgar 2 weeks ago. Seems kind person indeed.

fourpawnskewer

I've met many GMs at chess camps and instructional opportunities in general. Lots of lectures, etc.

JDA1958

Played Short and Speelman in simuls. Played Gary Lane OTB in a weekend open tournament. Best result, a draw with Richard Britton. Strong Hull player 2300+ ELO.

I've met 3: Irina Krush, Garry Kasparov, and Magnus Carlsen!!!

I met Irina Krush at the USATE in 2014. I waited for her to finish her game. Took a while. Since I was playing, I finished my game maybe 3 1/2 - 4 hrs into the round. I figured I shouldn't interrupt her while she played. She won her game :) I asked her to sign my board. I had to chase her down again because I forgot to ask her if I could take a picture with her. It ended up being a terribly blurry picture. I'll ask again if I see her sometime.

Garry Kasparov! He was at USATE in 2014 and answered some questions. I sat right near him! It was really crowded and all the kids were up in the front like me! Then he signed things and I never got a picture, of course. He didn't really say anything to me and I didn't get a chance because it was a literal mob around him. He signed the board that Irina Krush also signed. My dad had him sign our copy of his autobiography.

Magnus! Play Live Challenge May 5th, 2015 in NYC! Very nice! He shook all of our hands when he first came into the Marshall Chess Club. I was in a simul with 11 others. He shook my hand and smiled to start and end the game. It wasn't a bad game on my part (but of course I lost). He went over everyone's games (USING THE PIECES FROM FISCHER'S GAME OF THE CENTURY AT THE MARSHALL), which he magically memorized every move of every game for because he's MAGNUS FREAKING CARLSEN! He gave me a few tips and said that I would have had a fairly solid position if I had moved my bishop to a different square. Very supportive. Saw him later that night at the chess fundraiser we were invited to and he agreed to take another picture, smiling and shaking my hand again :) At that time he did not read the card that I gave him earlier but he said he would! He congratulated us all for our efforts and had a small, private conversation with the 12 of us before we left. Surprised

Also met Espen who's not a GM. He loved my card that I made for Magnus. Talked about it with my mom, hahaha. We're now Facebook friends :)

Synaphai

I have played a few GMs but have no interesting stories to tell about my conversations with them.

I suspect the truth is that he took one look at my rating and then went to the bar.

If someone had lit a match near him the entire hotel would have been in hazard of combustion but I still take it and make it the playing highlight of an otherwise mediocre and ordinary chess life.

This is fantastic.

Very cool stuff. I've heard nothing but good things about Magnus Carlsen. Competitive? Of course, but he appears, by all accounts I've read, to be a genuinely nice guy.

I met/played this WGM years ago and she gave me the worst beating I have ever received at the hands of a female !

Martin_Stahl

I'm not very outgoing so I've met fewer than I've had a chance to.

I went to the opening ceremony of the US Chess Championships this year. I saw chess.com's own FM Mike Klein and started talking to him. GM Timur Gareev came up to us and I got to shake his hand and listen in on his conversation with Mike.

A whole room full of GMs and I only met one Embarassed
